via www.businesspundit.com First off, I love that name. It just flows so nicely. Anyway… Latrell Sprewell played basketball in the NBA from 1992 to 2005. He was selected 24th overall by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the ‘92 draft. Sprewell only played for three teams in his career. His longest stint was with the Warriors from 1992 to 1998. When people hear the name Latrel Sprewell, many think of the “choking incident.” On December 1, 1997 Sprewell attacked his head coach P.J. Carlesimo, now the interim head coach for the Broolyn Nets, during a practice. Carlesimo yelled at Sprewell, telling him to “put a little mustard” on his pass. Sprewell said he wasn’t in the mood for critique, so when Carlesimo walked toward Sprewell grabbed him by the throat and threatened to kill him. He choked him for roughly ten seconds before other players and coaches pulled him away. This wasn’t Sprewell’s only violent act in his career. He once got in a fight with teammate Jerome Kersey during a practice, and Sprewell then left and came back with a two-by-four. In the end Sprewell was suspended for the rest of the season, 68 games, and Golden State traded him to the New York Knicks. He played for the Knicks until 2003 and finished his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Latrell was a very talented basketball player who unfortunately had some character issues that hindered his success. Still, he posted 18.3ppg, 4apg, and 1.4spg for his career. Sprewell was a 4-time All-Star, made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 1993, and made the All-NBA First Team and NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1994. I didn’t have the pleasure of watching many games when Latrell played; nevertheless, I still have his jersey and wear it when I play pickup basketball. -Kerr
