NBA-TV had their episode of Real Training Camp live from the Celtics training facility in Waltham today. For those who missed it, it will be on again at 2:30 pm ET tomorrow. It was great to watch them interact and watch the scrimmages going on. Here's a few random thoughts I had while watching.
The first thing I noticed was that even though they had microphones on Paul Pierce, Jared Sullinger and Jason Terry, very often the loudest voice being heard was Kevin Garnett. He could be heard barking out instructions, corrections and encouragement throughout the practice. He also was often shown illustrating some move for the young guys and guiding them through it.
Dennis Scott and the other guy were talking about the moves that Danny made and the players he brought in for this season and they made an interesting observation. The players he brought in this season all have a ring or have experience going far into the playoffs. Darko has a ring with Detroit. Jason Terry has a ring with Dallas. Jason Collins went to the Finals with the Nets in 2002. Courtney Lee went to the Finals in 2009 with the Magic.
Doc tried several different lineups. When they first opened, Rondo, Terry, Pierce, Bass and Garnett were wearing the 1st team green jerseys. They changed out lineups a couple of times during the practice. One of the fun battles to watch during the scrimmages was Darko and KG fighting for position in the post. That alone was worth the price of admission.
At one point, Pierce pointed out how they needed to use Darko as a passer in the high post because he is such a good passer out of the post. He also remarked on how smart he is.
Pierce was miked up and he was doing a whole lot of grunting and huffing and puffing out there. I'm not sure if he was doing it to freak the defender out or he's just not in the greatest shape and the grunts and huffing and puffing came naturally. He sure did make a lot of noises, though.
Towards the end of practice, Rondo was running one squad and had the clipboard and was setting up a play for the green team. Jamar Smith was doing the same thing for the white team. Neither team got a score out of the plays.
Several players were practicing half court shots after practice. They showed Jared Sullinger hitting one.
In the huddle at the end, they called "Together" rather than the traditional "ubuntu".
