And to think I believed we could blame Ray Allen’s injury entirely on his over-sized calves.

Allen, who earlier attributed some of his ankle pain to the aforementioned and ridiculously-sculpted calves, revealed Monday that he has bone spurs rolling around his ankle, which contributed to the swelling that has kept him from playing in the last seven games.

He is expected to miss at least tomorrow night’s meeting with the Miami Heat, and does not seem to know when his body will allow a return. (WEEI)

“They say it could be the size of a grain of sand but they’re not supposed to be in there,” Allen said. “As they swell they move around and when the swelling goes down, they rest.”

Allen wouldn’t put a timetable on anything beyond Tuesday.

“It’s still being a little troublesome, but it’s getting better,” he said. “I’m just aggressively treating it.”

We are getting close to the postseason and Allen still doesn’t seem like he’s recovering much, if at all. For the love of silky jump shots, he still wears a walking boot when he isn’t working out on an AlterG machine, an anti-gravity treadmill designed to limit friction and reduce swelling, or something like that. Walking boots, anti-gravity treadmills, bone spurs — none of this is good, especially with the playoffs two games away.

It’s time to start preparing for the notion, maybe a likelihood, that Allen might not return in time for Boston’s first playoff game.
