The Atlanta Hawks have had all sorts of problems over the course of the 2012-13 season. Their backcourt play has been shoddy at times, and Devin Harris and others have spent plenty of time injured, and they have lost their share of close games. Yet through it all, the team enters play on Wednesday night five-games above .500 and comfortably in the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Why has this team continued to win games this year? Josh Smith.

Renewed Hawks push past Grizzlies

ATLANTA -- Hawks coach Larry Drew said losing streaks inspire all kinds of maladies -- sleepless nights, edginess, flaring tempers. Returning home on Wednesday for their second game in two days against a similar kind of big, muscular opponent, the Hawks were at risk of losing their third straight and falling victim to all of that. Making matters worse, they were even more depleted...

POTD 2/6/13: Ivan Johnson on Ed Davis

Centuries ago, Sir Isaac Newton told us that objects in motion tend to stay in motion.  For this reason, no man without a death wish really has any desire to position himself in the path of a speeding Ivan Johnson.  Even other NBA players, who are quite large and competitive themselves, are hesitant to get in his way.  Recently, as if he’s suddenly realized just how frightening...

Hornets-Hawks Preview

The frontline duo of Josh Smith and Al Horford continues to be one of the biggest reasons for the Atlanta Hawks' success - or at times, lack thereof - especially of late. Both players will look to take advantage of an opponent that has struggled with interior defense recently Friday night against the visiting New Orleans Hornets. New Orleans will try to end a four-game road...

Video: Ivan Johnson puts Ed Davis on a poster

Tweet   For those of you who haven’t been following the Atlanta Hawks, reserve forward Ivan Johnson has been on a bit of a dunking bonanza recently. This past Saturday against the Chicago Bulls Johnson went coast-to-coast to beat the first quarter buzzer and finished emphatically over Taj Gibson. Wednesday Johnson was at it again, [...]

Al Horford On D.J. Augustin Hitting Him In Groin: “It Was A Very Dirty Play”

Al Horford wants the NBA to recall his flagrant foul on D.J. Augustin and is calling out the Pacers guard for an elbow to his family jewels. On a drive to the basket, Augustin seems to inadvertendly jab Horford in the groin area (Video) after being fouled which the Hawks’ center later called ‘dirty’ and intentional. According to Chris Vivlamore, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution...

Grizzlies-Hawks Preview

The Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies are struggling to find consistency, and recent sloppy play has only made that more difficult. Atlanta hopes to correct those mistakes and beat the visiting Grizzlies for the 11th time in 13 meetings on Wednesday night. The Hawks (26-21) have dropped 11 of 17 games after going 17-6 over the previous 23 as they seemed to be a factor in the...
