MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement to sign Russian guard Alexey Shved, according to a league source. Terms of the contract have not yet become available.Shved, 23, played for CSKA Moscow last season, and he's currently a member of the Russian national basketball team. Last season, he averaged 11.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game in Russian League play. A 6-foot-5, 161-pound guard, hes played professionally since 2006. Cleveland and Memphis were also reportedly interested in Shved, who visited Minneapolis on Tuesday just days after helping Russia earn an Olympic bid. Hes prized for his ballhandling skills and instincts and performed especially well in the Euroleague Final Four. The Timberwolves' roster, with this addition and that of Brandon Roy, will boast seven guards: Shved, Roy, Ricky Rubio, J.J. Barea, Wayne Ellington, Luke Ridnour and Malcolm Lee. Although coach Rick Adelman's system uses more guards than most, this addition might hint at a trade. However, rumors of trading a point guard have circled the team since it acquired Barea last December, and with Rubio possibly sidelined at the beginning of next season, depth will be key.Because of commitments with the Russian national team, Shved is not expected to participate with the Timberwolves at summer league in Las Vegas. The teams first game is July 16. The moratorium on free agency is set to expire at 11 p.m. CT on Tuesday, but with the Timberwolves' current salary cap situation, players like Shved and Roy, who agreed to sign with the team last Thursday, might have to wait longer for clarity on their contracts. Right now, the Timberwolves do not have cap space under the approximately 58 million salary cap for the 2012-13 season, but the current estimates include the contracts of Martell Webster, Brad Miller and Darko Milicic, who arent expected to return. Without those contracts, the team should have room to sign Shved, Roy and even Nicolas Batum, whom its reported to have offered a multi-year deal.Follow Joan Niesen on Twitter.
