New York Sports-Kings:
Stephon Marbury certainly had an interesting run in the NBA, particularly known for his scoring ability. The guard averaged over 19 points and 7 assists per game over his 13 year career before going to play ball overseas in China.
He was definitely a personality, and some would call him a chemistry killer.
Now, it looks like there are bigger issues on his plate than just being called a bad team player.
According to the New York Post, Stephon Marbury had an affair with his personal chef while he was a member of the New York Knicks. Notably, this was also around the same time that team executive Isiah Thomas was having his own sexual harassment issues.
Mitchell was soon serving up more than hot meals to her boss, the papers say.
“Starbury” fired her in 2006, and Mitchell complained that she’d been the victim of sexual harassment.
Marbury said he had considered their relationship “consensual” — but offered her $900,000 to keep her mouth shut.
Marbury, however, stopped making the payments in January 2010 after he’d already shelled out about $600,000 and, at Mitchell’s request, the case went to an arbitrator.
Well, this is a messy situation. One of the most notable players on the team and the most notable executive were both in hot water with sexual harassment charges. I would not want to be someone within the Knicks organization that knew of and were active in both these cases.
We’ll see what more comes out if this, if anything. Hopefully this is the last sexual harassment case the Knicks will have to deal with for a while.
Stephon Marbury is now playing in China, and is one of the most recognizable faces from the NBA to play and stay overseas.
