Earlier this offseason, Carmelo Anthony made a vow that he was tired of scoring 30 or 40 points on a nightly basis, and now had more of a focus on doing whatever it took to win games. If that took defending and rebounding, and only taking 12 shots, he would do it.
This is admirable for anyone who knows Melo’s game. He shoots a lot, but a lot of the time, he is very good at it. He’s taken a heavy amount of criticism, mostly since he was traded to the Knicks, for being a selfish player. While I wouldn’t call him selfish, you can at least see why people would think that.
So are we all of he sudden going to see an entirely new Carmelo Anthony when the season starts?
Teammate Tyson Chandler doesn’t think so.
Via the Wall Street Journal:
Center Tyson Chandler flatly dismissed the notion of Anthony’s finding a way to shoot the ball less.
“That’s not going to happen,” Chandler said before he went down with a knee injury in Wednesday’s game. “He has an instinct that only a few players have in this league. His ability to score isn’t a switch you can just turn off. So I expect him to be the same player.”
To be clear, I wouldn’t say that Chandler is taking a shot at Melo, or calling him a liar, by any stretch. Of all people, he knows what kind of player Melo is. For better or for worse, Carmelo Anthony is a scorer, and he always will be. That isn’t something that just changes overnight.
The Knicks need Anthony to be aggressive offensively, for sure. With slight moderations to his shot selection and his offensive outlook, he could be an unbelievable player. The talent and ability is there.
Since forcing his way to the Knicks, Carmelo Anthony has been the recipient of criticism from fed up Knicks fans. Whether it’s deserved or not is another issue, but he will look to silence the critics after his friend LeBron James did the same thing by winning his first NBA championship.
