The San Francisco 49ers are bucking a trend. Most teams that go from having losing records one year to posting 10 or more wins the next year typically fall back to 9-7 or worse in the third year of the cycle. According to the Pro Football Post's Joe Fortenbaugh, 29 teams have gone from a sub-.500 record to an above-.500 record over the past 10 years. In 26 of those cases, the team has finished with no more than nine wins the next season. The 49ers are in good position to avoid that fate after posting a 6-2 record through the first half of the season. Barring a collapse, San Francisco is set up for another double-digit win season and a second consecutive playoff appearance. The 49ers are bucking the trend by being far better statistically than they were last year. They needed improvement this year because so much of their success last season was predicated on their favorable turnover ratio, which was a whopping plus-28. Instead of winning with turnovers and field positi...

NFL Rules Against 49ers On QB Alex Smith Appeal
Alex Smith's 18-of-19 passing line Monday night will stand after the Elias Sports Bureau concluded a potential 20th pass attempt was indeed a run by Michael Crabtree, Cam Inman of Bayareanewsgroup reports.
The league's record book requires a minimum of 20 attempts to qualify for the highest completion percentage in a game.
Crabtree caught a backward pass from Smith to...
49ers' Smith remains hard to peg
Alex Smith has played 7 1/2 years with the San Francisco 49ers, yet it's hard to say who he really is as a quarterback. For every statement that can be made about Smith, an equally good counterargument can be offered. Some say the 49ers are not built for making comebacks. In their two losses this year against the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, the 49ers got down early...
Ten reasons why Montana is not the greatest ever
Robert Kraft recently stated that he thought, with all due respect to Joe Montana, that Tom Brady might already be the greatest QB of all-time. In part, I agree with him, Tom Brady is better than Joe Montana. And it’s really not even close. One of the common arguments on Denver Sports Chat has revolved … Continue reading »The post Ten reasons why Joe Montana is not the greatest...

NFL Rumors: NFL Denies 49ers QB Alex Smith Record After San Francisco Challenges Michael Crabtree Lateral
It was a near record setting performance by Alex Smith on Monday Night Football, following a 24-3 victory for his San Francisco 49ers against the Arizona Cardinals. I say near record setting, because the NFL has upheld the initial ruling made by the referees, even after the call was challenged by the 49ers.
On Monday night, Smith completed an impressive 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards...

San Francisco 49ers: Week 9 NFL Power Rankings (#7)
Last week: 6 (-1)
Record: 6-2
Alex Smith was 18 of 19 on Monday Night against the Cardinals, one completion shy of setting the all-time record for completion percentage in a single game. He did set the single game for most pass attempts with only 1 incompletion and that incompletion was actually a drop. The knock on him, however, is that he settled for mostly short stuff, completing...

Alex Smith had no idea he was close to completion percentage record: ‘We’re not a stats team’
Alex Smith was one passing attempt short of qualifying for the NFL’s single-game completion percentage record by a quarterback, and he said after Monday night’s win that he had no idea about being so close to the mark.
“To be honest, I didn’t have any idea,” Smith responded when told about the mark on ESPN’s postgame show.
As if that wasn’t enough, he added that he...

Monday night’s NFC west divisional showdown saw the San Francisco 49ers go into the University of Phoenix Stadium and completely dismantle the Arizona Cardinals 24-3. The 49ers, on their part, controlled the entire aspect of the game on both offense and defense. They looked as crisp and precise as they have all year, and they dictated the action on nearly every down. The Cardinals...
