The San Francisco 49ers' defense was their strength last season, and could be even more dominant this season, so defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was somewhat disappointed with what he saw in the team's first exhibition game, a 17-6 victory over the Vikings on Friday. "Well, we didn't play as well as we're capable of playing in those first two series," he said. "We let Minnesota get two field goals and I think they drove it for 130 some yards in both series. We gave up a big play in the first drive, which set up the first field goal. Then we didn't play well as unit on the second drive. We had an offside penalty. We didn't play a route correctly. We were not sharp at all." The 49ers'first-team defense allowed the Vikings to gain 59 and 63 yards on the opening drives of the game. The defense had been performing well in practice, and Fangio had no explanation for Friday's performance. "I don't know," he said. &qu...

Randy Moss Goes All John F. Kennedy, Says Playing Is No Longer 'What the NFL Does for Me'

Randy Moss is with the fifth team of his 13-year NFL career, and not surprisingly, he's talking about growing up and having a different approach this time with the 49ers -- likely his last chance to make a difference in the NFL after burning his way out of several teams. Moss is saying and doing the right things early, but what may be most remarkable about his comeback attempt...

Aldon Smith may miss the rest of preseason with hip injury

SAN FRANCISCO- The 49ers are counting on defensive sophomore beast Aldon Smith to do big things for them this year. That is why after surviving an injury-related scare during Friday night’s preseason opener against the Vikings, we probably won’t much if any of him at all for the rest of the league’s exhibition period. Smith left the game with a hip issue that will put him on...

San Francisco 49ers: Biggest Home Game of 2012

When Kyle Williams fumbled a punt in overtime of the NFC Championship, the San Francisco 49ers’ season was all but finished. Only four plays after the muffed punt, New York Giants kicker, Lawrence Tynes, made it official with a 31-yard field goal. The Niners have had an entire offseason to digest and dwell on the pain, the hurt, and the what ifs. All of that time to replay and...

The three-time All-Pro during the 1950s will be honored for "his outstanding achievements and contributions to the 49ers organization" will be recognized during halftime of the team's Oct. 14 home game against the Giants. Aldon Smith most likely out for rest of preseason

The 49ers received quite a scare during Friday’s night win over the Minnesota Vikings. Not long into the first quarter starting OLB Aldon Smith landed hard on his hip and left the game due to injury. At the time the severity of the injury was unknown, the 49ers took precaution when they had Aldon carted back to the locker room. It was reported after the game Aldon was being assisted...

49ers Sign TE's Gijon Robinson, Joe Sawyer, Cut OG Garrett Chisolm

The 49ers have signed not one, but two, tight ends to address their recent shortage at the position. The team today inked both Gijon Robinson, who played at Missouri Western, and Joe Sawyer, who played at Southwest Missouri State, to deals. To make room on the roster, they cut guard Garrett Chisolm. Nate Byham, who is coming back from an ACL injury, and Delanie Walker, who suffered...

Is this perhaps the worst 49ers anthem ever or is it so bad it’s good..

Preseason: 49ers Players to watch

This week, I’ve decided to cut out the issues and go general – and pick out the ‘ones to watch’ for the whole preseason. These can range from specific players to overall topics. Let’s get started. Boone To RG: For my money, probably the biggest weakness on the 49er team the last few years has been the position of right guard. We’ve had a revolving door of crap out...

Meet The Goodells: San Francisco 49ers

It’s always hard when you get swagger-jacked by the New York Giants.  SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS : 2011 RECORD – 13-3:   San Francisco’s revival came due to the infectious nature of first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh and a bruising defense. Also, Alex Smith and the offense took exceptional care of the football throughout the year. The 49ers committed just 10 turnovers (fewest...

NFC West and North Previews by G.W. Gras

NFC West 1. San Francisco 49ers : Last season coach Jim Harbaugh brought the 49ers back.  It wasn't the 49ers team we're used to seeing though.  No more Montana to Rice express, no more pretty boys like Steve Young on magazine covers. . . no bright red and glorious gold.  It was dirty, gritty, throwback football.  In a league where big offenses seem to trump all while...
