The 49ers fear that backup return man Kyle Williams tore ligaments in his knee and will be lost for the year, a league source said. Williams, who suffered the injury at the end of the third quarter, had an increased role on returns Sunday because Ted Ginn was dealing with a wrist issue, Jim Harbaugh said. The Saints did not punt after Williams left the game. If they had, defensive back Perrish Cox likely would have handled the return for the 49ers. Both Cox and second-round pick LaMichael James, who has been inactive every week of the season, can handle punts if there are injuries to those ahead of them on the depth chart. After another big win, 49ers QBs still in limbo

Jim Harbaugh has watched each of his two quarterbacks lead the San Francisco 49ers to big wins in hostile, road environments - Alex Smith in the season opener at Green Bay's Lambeau Field back in September, and Colin Kaepernick on Sunday at the New Orleans Superdome. Which one gets the ball on Sunday at St. Louis? Harbaugh is still mum on that, though he did say Monday he will...

Via Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports:With 1:13 left in San Francisco's eventual 31-21 win, the 49ers were set up to kick a 33-yard field goal, but the attempt was blocked by...

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, sidelined since Nov. 11 with a concussion, was cleared to play today against the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome, but Colin Kaepernick is the starter. It will be the second start for Kaepernick, the second-year player out of Nevada, who helped demolish the Chicago Bears Monday night, 32-7. Smith is the only other active quarterback...

San Francisco 49ers will announce starting quarterback this week

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh declined to announce the team’s starting quarterback prior to their game against the New Orleans Saints. Harbaugh cited that he didn’t want to give the other team a competitive edge in game planning. This week however, Harbaugh has had a change of heart and has told reporters that he will formally announce the Niners starting...

49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh Likely To Announce Starting QB On Wednesday

In today’s installment of As the Quarterback Turns, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh went out of his way to speak fondly of Alex Smith. Harbaugh, in his weekly Monday news conference, said he probably will announce Sunday’s starter against St. Louis on Wednesday — because he doesn’t want his players to field a barrage of “Who’s the QB?” questions all week, as they did last week...

It Appears Kapernick is the Answer for the 49ers

As you probably know by now, I'm a huge fan of the San Francisco 49ers and have been ever since I can remember. So can imagine how great I feel to see the 'Niners do well. Before last season, I haven't been able to say that for a while, since the 49ers didn't make the playoffs every year since the '02-'03 season. To be honest, I didn't expect the team...

Report: Alex Smith could be done in San Francisco

According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, this could be quarterback Alex Smith’s final season with the San Francisco 49ers if he doesn’t regain his starting spot now that Colin Kaepernick has taken over as Niners’ lead  signal-caller. The 49ers didn’t draft Kaepernick in the 4th round of the 2011 draft to sit and watch.  It’s obvious that he’s ready to take over as their...

Straight Outta Stockton - Week 12

This week's Straight Outta Stockton could easily be renamed Straight Outta Aikman as the lead NFL on Fox analyst had a rough time during yesterday's Saints-49ers game.  While a few of those are noted below, I have to pay tribute to the work Aikman is doing to the English language.  Multiple times during Sunday's telecast, Aikman said "I don't disagree"...
