By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer Andy Lee's nerves came on a full day before San Francisco's playoff opener a year ago, not just leading up to his first punt as is typical each game. Tight end Vernon Davis was surprised at his butterflies stepping onto the NFL's big stage for the first time, too. Last January, most of the 49ers had never been part of a playoff game and were suiting up for a rookie NFL coach. Jim Harbaugh's team is now a playoff-tested bunch of veterans determined to make this a special postseason run that goes one step further - to the Super Bowl. The NFC West champion Niners (11-4-1) can get one step closer when they host the Green Bay Packers in the divisional playoffs on Saturday night in a rematch of the season opener won by San Francisco at Lambeau Field. --- Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL

49ers look to get Vernon Davis involved in the offense again

Vernon Davis in the 2011 playoffs came up big, playing his best games in the spotlight. However, in 2012 after a hot start for the talented tight end, teams began game planning for him forcing the 49ers offensive minds to start utilizing other options. Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers know they are going to need Davis going forward since he hasn’t been much of a factor the past 11...

QB Kaepernick showing 'advanced acuity'

With 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the physical gifts are obvious. He's fast, he's strong, he's got an elite arm, he eludes tackles. The list goes on. That's not what has impressed coach Jim Harbaugh most this week as Kaepernick prepares for his first career playoff game. For Harbaugh, it's been his ability to pick things up on the mental side that has...

49ers kicking competition has a leader

Great news! Somebody is leading the 49ers kicking derby between David Akers and Billy Cunduff. Bad news! Jim Harbaugh won’t say who. From Can Inman: “We have a leader in the clubhouse and we’ll see how it goes today and tomorrow,” said Harbaugh, without divulging who that leader is. So, it looks like you’ll just have to use your imagination to guess who between Akers and...

Report: Justin Smith might not play full game vs Packers

According to Eric Branch of Blog.sfgate.com, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will evaluate his defensive end, Justin Smith, under close his supervision on Saturday evening. Fangio will pull Smith out of the Divisional playoff game if his defensive end is not performing up-to-par. “If, from my point of view, he’s not playing up to his standard or close to it, we’ll put...
