Reminiscence of Jack Youngblood of the Los Angeles Rams (he famously played with a broken leg for an entire playoff run including the Super Bowl), Joe Staley played a portion of the game against the Rams with a broken fibula.

You have to be a tough guy to continue to play with a broken leg. Here are the details:

The X-ray machine told Joe Staley his left leg was fine, so he did what any self-respecting NFL left tackle would do.

Not knowing he had a broken left fibula, Staley went back onto the football field until he could stand no more, and then he stayed a little longer before taking off the end of Sunday’s 23-20 overtime victory against the Rams at Candlestick Park.

“The X-rays were negative, so I went back out there,” Staley said as he held onto crutches in the locker room. “Then I got kicked again, and I knew it was broken, but I stayed in for a couple plays.”

Staley will be out for about four weeks and it comes at a bad time for the 49ers as they are just getting a little momentum now that Troy Smith has taken over the reigns of the team.
