This is the first installment of my new series in which I will be counting down my 2009 NFL Power Rankings over the next seven weeks leading up to opening kickoff.  Be sure to check in every week day up to Sept. 10 to see the next team.  There will certainly be some controversial rankings.  As T.O. would say, getcha' popcorn ready.  Enjoy! 2008 Record:  0-16 2008 Season Review: One season after the NFL saw its first 16-0 team, the Detroit Lions made history by being the first 0-16 team in league history. After quarterback Jon Kitna went down early on, Dan Orlovsky and Daunte Culpepper struggled to replace him. The offense struggled, ranking 27th in points scored, and 30th in yards gained. The defense was even worse as they ranked last in points allowed and yards allowed. Team President and GM Matt Millen was finally fired.  Head coach Rod Marinelli also lost his job. Key Additions: QB, Matthew Stafford (draft), TE Brandon Pettigrew (draft), LB Juli...

As Training Camp Approaches, Is There a Matt Stafford / Dante Culpepper QB Controversy In Detroit?

It’s pretty natural when you have to legitimate contenders on the roster that fans will speculate and chirp about which Detroit Lions QB should be taking the snaps. There are 2 philosophies involved: Go with the Veteran and let the kid learn on the sidelines (like Kitna/Palmer of a few years ago) or throw the kid in and see what happens (you never know with that… Could...

Pimpin' ain't easy*.* except where otherwise noted

I'll be honest, when reports first started surfacing that the 0-16 Detroit Lions had their eye on Matt Stafford as the first pick of the 2009 draft, I felt a little sorry for him. Then, of course, he signed a six-year contract with the Lions for $41.7 million, and I started feeling a little better for him. Now, with the start of the NFL season less than a month and a half away...

Lions' Special Teams Have Been Anything BUT, Lately

He'd field the punt, no matter what---even if a swarm of would-be tacklers were surrounding him. The fair catch wasn't an option. Often, the opponents would have prayed for his hand to go up, as a matter of fact. Then a jitterbug move here and there, a sidestep, and then he'd emerge from the scrum, bursting into daylight. The late sports writer Joe Falls had it right about...

Matt Stafford is the Detroit Lions' Only Hope to Change Culture

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz is faced with more than just building a team. He has been dealt the job of changing a culture. It is a culture of losing that has been hovering around Detroit Lions football since the glory days of the 1950s. With one playoff victory since 1957—you can't make stuff like that up—it has culminated toward a historic finish. Everybody...

Three Under the Radar Storylines for the Detroit Lions' Season

There’s a lot of talk about the Detroit Lions this off season.  I guess a remarkably terrible season and a complete organization overhaul will do that to a team.  While we’ve heard so much about the supposedly great class of rookies and the improved linebacker unit, there are a few storylines that have remained mostly under the radar. With training camp opening...

Detroit Lions: The NFL's "Special Needs" Team

(pictured above: new Lion Dennis Northcutt, as a competent punt returner for the Cleveland Browns) He’d field the punt, no matter what—even if a swarm of would-be tacklers were surrounding him. The fair catch wasn’t an option. Often, the opponents would have prayed for his hand to go up, as a matter of fact. Then a jitterbug move here and there, a sidestep...

Let's Talk About the Detroit Lions and the Playoffs

There are certain things that playoff teams (generally) have in common. It is obviously not a revelation that the Detroit Lions lacked most of these things last season, but they have certainly added a large influx of talent this year, potentially making them a threat to compete for a playoff spot in a wide open division that thankfully won't be bothered by the presence of a purple...

Why The Detroit Lions Must Sit Matthew Stafford

As the media keeps churning out fluff pieces about how great Matthew Stafford is, and how he is the saviour of the Detroit Lions, I continue to shake my head. Just a couple months ago, Daunte Culpepper was entrenched as the starter of the Detroit Lions. Stafford? A mere challenger, who had only a slim chance of winning the job out of training camp. Now? The Detroit media reports...

Matthew Stafford's the starting QB this season?

Everyone has an opinion.  What's intriguing is that some reports in the media are even selecting him as the starter right now. Come-on . . . it's still early.  Let Daunte Culpepper   Continued. . .

To Start or Not To Start Stafford: An Historical Analysis

As training camp rapidly approaches, many eyes will be directed at a certain team in southeastern Michigan that went winless a year ago. It's not because people outside of Michigan suddenly began to care about the Detroit Lions.  It's not even because the country is eager to mock the hapless Motor City kitties. The real reason that millions of people will be watching...
