The 49ers have signed free-agent Shane Andrus this evening to handle the kicking chores Sunday in the team's season finale against the St. Louis Rams. Andrus, who played at Murray State and in NFL Europe, is a right-footed kicker. That explains why punter/holder Andy Lee was seen practicing holding for a righty during practice on Friday. Andrus joined the 49ers in St. Louis on Friday as a replacement for Ricky Schmitt (groin strain), who was a replacement for Joe Nedney (hamstring strain). Andrus played three games with the Bucs this season. He missed his only field-goal attempt. In the exhibition season, he made 5 of 6 attempts with the Colts. He is the answer to a trivia question: Who scored the last point of the now-defunct NFL Europe? He kicked an extra point for Hamburg late in World Bowl XV. The 49ers placed Schmitt on injured reserve/minor to make room on the 53-man roster for Andrus. * * *
