PHILADELPHIA - OCTOBER 11: Andy Reid, head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles works on the sideline against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lincoln Financial Field on October 11, 2009 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)
By all accounts, Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid will find himself unemployed sometime soon. Possibly today, on what has become Black Monday for NFL coaches. Reid has had a stellar career as head coach of the Eagles. But his demise can be traced to one decision. When the Eagles decided to sign Michael Vick in 2009 as a backup to Donovan McNabb, it was a feel-good story. Everyone was happy that Vick was given another chance to play in the NFL, albeit as a backup at the time. Within a season though, McNabb was drawing the ire of Eagles fans who were clamoring for Vick to be the starter.Vick was named the starter for the 2010 season, while McNabb was shipped off to the Redskins. But if you look closely at what transpired in 2009, the move was questionable. The Eagles went 12-4 over the regular season, but lost their final game to the Cowboys and their opening round playoff game to the . . . Cowboys. The 2010 season went as well as could be hoped for. The Eagles still made the playoffs with a 10-6 record. Vick played in only 12 games. Kevin Kolb said "Hi' for a few games and the Cardinals thought that was enough to give him a few million. For 2011, the Eagles started to slide, finishing at 8-8, and out of the playoffs. Vick played in only 13 games that year, finishing with 18 passing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Some will call that a regression. Some will call that playing to his career average.2012 completed the train wreck. The Eagles finished 4-12, and rumors are circulating today that Andy Reid will be dismissed. Vick played in only 10 games, while being sidelined with a concussion for much of the latter half of the season. For all the good Vick did in 2010, he never played a full season. After the 2010 season, he regressed and I would be surprised if he isn't cut or put on the trading block by the next coach. The biggest mistake Andy Reid made was thinking Michael Vick was going to take him to the promised land.
