Veteran WR Randy Moss has made his return to the NFL for the 2012 season, joining the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners were sorely lacking at the wide receiver position heading into the 2012 season and have added Mario Manningham to the mix along with Randy Moss and Michael Crabtree, a player who has yet to reach his potential. The early returns are in on Moss, and the results are glowing, but are the expectations surrounding Moss for 2012 reasonable?
There is no doubt that Moss is a freakish talent. He has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in ten of this thirteen seasons, scoring 13 or more touchdowns in six of those years. Despite his physical size and exceptional speed, Moss’ career in football hasn’t been without controversy, starting in college. Which version of Randy Moss will the 49ers see in 2012? Will it be the Moss which is capable of scoring double digit touchdowns or the Moss which drops his pants and moons Seattle Seahawks fans? Will it be the version of Moss which recorded 4...

We take a look at what's going on in San Francisco, leading off with Packers-killer Randy Moss' attempt to resurrect his career. That and more as we put a Packers spin on this year's season-opening showdown.
QB Alex Smith (San Francisco)
Smith could improve on the 17 touchdowns and 3144 yards he had in 2011 as the 49ers have gotten him 3 new receivers, Mario Manningham, AJ Jenkins, and Randy Moss. However, they added another running back through the draft too so they will still be a run heavy team. I also don’t see his 5 interceptions as replicable.
Projection: 3200 passing yards,...

When San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith said that winning trumps stats in the grand scheme of things in the NFL, he cited Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton as an example of a player who puts up monster stats but the team had a losing season.
Upon hearing about what Smith said, Carolina linebacker Jon Beason stepped in Newton's defense. Now 49ers linebacker...
Alex Smith started a mini-firestorm when he cited Cam Newton as an example of why passing yards don’t matter too much as a stat. Newton’s teammate Jon Beason, a linebacker with the Panthers, supported his quarterback by challenging Smith’s credentials.
Not to be outdone, 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis chimed in via Twitter late Friday night:
Wins are Wins I stand with My...
