Apparently, the “Jolly Rancher” candy was not so jolly to Cowboys safety Barry Church. I guess you could say Church had to learn the “hard” way after chipping his tooth on a strawberry flavored Jolly Rancher. Church reported some small pains on and off for a couple of weeks after the incident, and then the pain started to mount. On Monday, Church had to go to the dentist and explain why his tooth was chipped and the excruciating pain it was causing. The dentist then performed a dreaded root-canal and Church missed the Cowboys walk-through and practice because of the surgery.
As a man who has had plenty of oral surgery for anyone’s lifetime, I can’t blame him for not showing up to practice. After an oral surgery of that magnitude, you are lucky not to drool on yourself as you walk out the front door, let alone catch a football. One poke to the mouth will send you into a fetal position without the right medication.
When asked about the incident, Church said his sweet tooth was way too big to swear off the candy. He would instead settle for the softer stuff, like Starburst, Skittles, and things like that. Church said he caught a little grief in the locker room from being injured by the candy. Compared to being placed on injured reserve for 13 games with an ACL tear last season, I’d say he has the right to laugh this one off.
