It wasn’t a work of art. But for the Lions who finished last season on a sour note with a 4-12 record a win in Sunday’s opener was just about picture perfect. The several points left on the table the myriad of penalties and the offense's early struggles didn't matter when the final gun sounded. Instead Reggie Bush's electric plays and the Lions' four forced turnovers will be the key memories from Sunday's 34-24 victory over the Vikings in the 2013 season opener. Bush juked and spun his way to 191 yards from scrimmage including a 77-yard touchdown reception that gave the Lions a 27-17 lead in the third quarter from which the Vikings never recovered. Fellow running back Joique Bell added two rushing touchdown and 67 receiving yards and Matthew Stafford finished 27 of 41 for 356 yards a touchdown and an interception. Star receiver Calvin Johnson had only four receptions for 37 yards but veteran Nate Burleson had six catches for 78 yards. Although the Lions had many issues in the game this appears to be a more talented more capable team than the one that stumbled last year. Of course issues remain for a team that had just six points in the first half and 11 penalties for 88 yards. Punter Sam Martin muffed a snap when the Lions attempted a field goal on their first drive. Instead of taking a 3-0 lead the Vikings took over and on their first play running back Adrian Peterson ran for a 78-yard touchdown to put Minnesota up 7-0. The Lions scored field goals on their next two drives to cut the deficit to 7-6 but both possessions appeared more promising. Johnson had a 20-yard touchdown reception reversed after review on the first and on the second a holding penalty on Brandon Pettigrew nullified a fourth-down conversion in the red zone forcing the field-goal try.
