As expected, the Chicago Bears have placed the franchise tag on RB Matt Forte. The Bears running back has been wanting to lock up a long-term contract with the franchise and threatened to sit out last season in order to gain some leverage in negotiating a long-term deal. The move will pay Forte upwards of $7.5 million for the 2012 season as the two sides try to negotiate a long-term deal.
Forte, 26, joins eight other players to have the franchise tag placed on them. Philadelphia Eagles WR DeSEan Jackson, Atlanta Falcons CB Brent Grimes, Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice, Cincinnati Bengals K Mike Nugent, San Francisco 49ers DB Dashon Goldson, Washington Redskins TE Fred Davis, Cleveland Browns K Phil Dawson and Arizona Cardinals DE Calais Campbell have all received the franchise tag from their respective clubs.
Teams have until Monday, March 5th to place the franchise tag on one of their players.
