The acquisition of ex-Baltimore Ravens safety James Ihedigbo and the recent re-signing of veteran CB Rashean Mathis may give some insight into how the Detroit Lions might be viewing their current secondary situation. Already flush with coaches who have a rich and successful history of developing young secondary talent, the team now has installed proven mentors and successful leaders in Mathis and Ihedigbo. And all of this may point to the fact that GM Martin Mayhew and head coach Jim Caldwell may feel at ease enough with their young defensive backs to put off drafting a corner or safety, or both until the middle rounds where Detroit has previously met with some success at other positions.  Or they could simply go with what they have right now and wait for 2015 to roll around.…

Detroit Lions: Questions looming over first-round pick

Just like any other April, there are many questions surrounding the Detroit Lions and their first-round selection in the upcoming draft. Uncertainties range from what position to draft, to the possibility of trading up or down, and even whether general manager Marin Mayhew will stick with his “best player available” approach. How it breaks down: Draft ‘em if they’re there...

The Detroit Lions are looking for a wide receiver in the upcoming 2014 NFL Draft, and there have been many reports on which player they might be targeting. One report stated that the Lions were looking to trade up for Sammy Watkins, while another said that Mike Evans would be their target without trading up. This time around, it is a player that would like to suit up in a Lions jersey...

How did Mayhew do?

Four years ago, the Detroit Lions drafted six players. Only one -- defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, the No. 2 pick overall -- remains on the team. Three years ago, the Lions drafted five players. Two of them -- defensive tackle Nick Fairley, the 13th pick overall, and running back Mikel Leshoure, a second-rounder -- are still Lions. The team's current lack of depth is clearly...

Detroit Lions re-sign C Dominic Raiola

Dominic Raiola is aging, going into his age 36 season, and he looked done as recently as 2010-2011, when he graded out below average on Pro Football Focus in both seasons, including 5th worst among centers in 2010. However, he’s put together back-to-back strong seasons on an overall strong Detroit offensive line over the past two seasons, grading out 13th and 2nd among centers...

Lions excited to see what Jeremy Ross can do after full offseason in Detroit

Golden Tate was the best punt returner in the NFL last season, if you believe ProFootballFocus. And a lot of people do. Tate wants to continue to return punts for the Detroit Lions, which might seem like a no-brainer. Only problem: The Lions really like the old guy too. Jeremy Ross was among the team's biggest surprises last season. He went from being cut by the Packers in...

Ndamukong Suh should be there

The most disturbing aspect of Ndamukong Suh's absence from the Detroit Lions' voluntary offseason program isn't that he isn't there. It's that his team doesn't have the courage to forcefully question that choice. This essentially is one more example of why this franchise has enjoyed only two winning seasons in the past 16 years. It's also the first indication...

Projecting the Detroit Lions schedule before the draft

The Detroit Lions have expectations of reaching the playoffs this year. Team president Tom Lewand has said more than once that he believes the Lions are good enough to win the Super Bowl this year. There is a long way to go with the draft still ahead of us and the inevitable injuries during preseason and a few free agents that will be signed, but I thought I would take an opportunity...

Detroit Lions 2014 Draft Preview: Sammy Watkins

For this 2014 Detroit Lions draft preview, we’re just going to dive right in.  There’s a lot I want to cover about this guy and a lot of people have VERY strong opinions as to whether or not we should move up to grab him.  This prospect being Sammy Watkins.  So as we know, our receivers last year were at best; bad and at worst; awful.  We led the league in drops with 44...

If option is available, Detroit Lions better off trading back in NFL draft, not moving up

It's that time of year where we get in the bad habit of peeking at every NFL mock draft, just hoping to see something different. Thankfully, Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke provided this week's fodder, incorporating six trades into his first-round projection. While you may expect the Detroit Lions to be moving up in this hypothetical scenario, Burke actually flips the...

Detroit Lions sign WR Golden Tate

Golden Tate has never had a 1000 yard season, but there’s an argument to be made that he’s a better wide receiver than Eric Decker. His numbers have been kept down by a run heavy offense, but he’s averaged 1.80 and 2.01 yards per route run in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Compare that to 1.80 and 2.03 for Eric Decker and they’re much more comparable than you think. Golden Tate...

Lions Rumors: Detroit planning to trade up in the NFL Draft?

The Detroit Lions have been rumored as a team looking to trade up in May's NFL Draft. Wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans are two players the Lions are very interested in as Detroit would like to continue to add play makers to pair opposite Calvin Johnson, or even eventually replace the Pro Bowler. The visits and private workouts Detroit has held for players like Watkins...
