OXNARD, Calif. Barring injury, Terrance Williams and Dwayne Harris will likely battle for the Dallas Cowboys' No. 3 wide receiver spot. Harris looked to be the front-runner for that role in January. The 25-year-old closed the 2012 season by making 17 catches for 222 yards and a touchdown in the final seven games. But the Cowboys selected Williams in the third round of April's draft. Why does Harris think they drafted a receiver so early? "Miles Austin is getting old and they want to bring in young guys," Harris said Monday. "Dez Bryant is still young, T-Will is young, I'm young, and Miles, we don't know how long he's going to be here or how long he's going to last. But we're hoping for the best with Williams. That's my guy. And you got to bring in young guys. That's what this league is about." At 29, Austin is the second-oldest receiver on the camp roster. The other receivers likely to get regular season playing time are all 25 or younger. Harris has become Dallas' No. 1 punt and kick return option, but he'd certainly like the opportunity to build on his strong finish and catch some passes from Tony Romo as a regular option in the Cowboys offense. Harris said Romo should trust him, "because every time I touch the ball I make something happen with it." "Tony understands that," Harris added. "I understand that. Coaches understand that. My little time that I do touch the ball, my job is to make things happen." The former sixth-round pick will get plenty of opportunities to touch the ball in training camp and throughout the preseason. And so will Williams. May the best man win. "I wouldn't even call it a competition," Harris said. "We're out here just playing football. The coaches are going to put who they like out there on the field. Our job is just to go out there and play football and let the coaches sort that out." Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
