In yet another coaching carousel move, John L. Smith has been replaced at Michigan State by Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio. Smith was a lame duck coach most of this season due to the fact that the Spartans greatly underachieved. Despite having highly regarded QB Drew Stanton and other skilled players, Smith couldn't rally his troops after the heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame early in the season. Smith had been on the hot seat for awhile and this finally was the season that sent school officials over the edge. Dantonio led a surprising Cincinnati team, which just upset previously unbeaten Rutgers and took them out of the national title hunt.

  • This is a great hire for Michigan State. I'm sorry to see Dantonio leave Cincinnati. He was building a program there that might have been able to compete in the Big East in a year or two.
  • True but he has only had limited success in his few years at Cincy, and MSU plays against the best in the nation week in and week out in the Big 10.
  • Dantonio should do a good job at Michigan State, at least with their defense. He has experience coaching in the Big 10- he used to be the defensive coordinator for Ohio State.
  • I didn't know he coached for Ohio State, well I guess he knows what he's going up against then.
  • He was defensive coordinator in the OSU 2002 National Championship season. I've read some other interviews/reports that mention MSU was specifically looking for someone with strong Ohio connections, since the state is such a huge recruiting target.

  • Well then he seems like a great hire for the program, because MSU needs some good recruits.
