Down and Distance:
The search in Detroit for a compliment to Calvin Johnson at wide receiver is in full swing, at the same time interest in former Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey is also heating up. DHB met with the Colts earlier this week, and is now scheduled to visit the Lions.
The Lions have Nate Burleson returning, but he’s 32. They still have the promising but injury prone Ryan Broyles waiting in the wings, but he appears to be more of a slot specialist. Heyward-Bey, although inconsistent during his four-year tenure with the Oakland Raiders, is a burner who could stretch the field for QB Matthew Stafford and give him a viable downfield option other than Johnson.
Johnson is often the target of numerous double teams, and in some cases bracket coverage and triple teams. Just having speed opposite Calvin Johnson will take some of the pressure off him. On the flipside, Heyward-Bey has the potential to come into his own being in an offense like Detroit’s. Looks like a win-win for all sides if DHB happens to be signed by the Lions.
