DALLAS -- Today marks the deadline for new contracts to be given to franchise-tagged players and the agent for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer tells FOX Sports Southwest that he anticipates "no last-minute" change in Spencer's status. So Spencer, agent Jordan Woy tells us, "is in a situation where both sides are happy with the one-year deal. We tried hard to but could not work a new deal out. But we have a very positive relationship with the Cowboys and Anthony is excited about the chance to play to the best of his abilities again this season. The parties hit what sources called a "downturn" in talks in early July, the problem being the club believes recent NFL deals have shoved the market value of comparable players down to the 5-million-a-year range. Meanwhile, the Spencer camp wanted the recent five-year, 66-million extension given to Packers linebacker Clay Matthews to be part of the conversation. Or, at least, the 8-million-a-year deal Cleveland gave pass-rushing linebacker Paul Kruger to lure him from Baltimore. With the passing of today's deadline to create a new contract, Spencer Dallas' best defender a year ago and a Pro Bowler will play under the terms of the 10.6 million existing tag deal.
