Cliff Avril is all but certain to hit free agency next week, and the Cleveland Browns look like they’ll be one of the first teams to give him a call. Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer reported Wednesday that the Browns are interested in both Avril and Baltimore’s Paul Kruger.
Avril, a defensive end, will also be a hot ticket come Tuesday. But the Browns might have the inside track, because their new defensive line coach Joe Cullen helped draft Avril, 26, in Detroit in 2008 and developed him as a rookie. That season, Avril led all rookies with six sacks and four forced fumbles.
One key piece of info here: The Browns are planning to move to a 3-4 defense from a 3-4, which leaves them thin at outside linebacker. Presumably, that’s where they would want to play Avril — he played there some at Purdue and projected as a DE/OLB hybrid when he entered the NFL. The Lions have used him as a 4-3 end since drafting him.
Avril made nearly $11 million as a franchise-tagged player last year, and Cabot speculates that Kruger could wind up fetching around $9 million per year on his new contract. That’s probably a starting point for Avril, who looks to be the top pass-rusher available in free agency.
A caveat to Avril and Kruger’s values is that the draft is loaded with rush-linebacker/end types, so any team feeling that the pot is too rich in free agency may opt to go that route in April’s draft.

What Do Browns Fans Really Know About Rob Chudzinski?
Was it already predetermined that the Browns weren’t going to be able to hire a new head coach with a winning record? Is that why Haslam & Banner settled for Rob Chudzinski? Lets face it, with the hiring of Chudzinski, the improvement over Shurmur may only be minor. As an offensive coordinator, Chud only had one winning season in the NFL. I guess we can take that as a positive...

The Detroit Lions have decided to give punter Blake Clingan a shot to make this year's team.
Clingan was signed by the Lions after today's workout in Allen Park. According to the team's website reporter, "The Lions had to keep asking Clingan to move back during the tryout because he kept hitting the top of the indoor facilities roof."

Lions sign punter Clingan
The Detroit Lions have signed punter Blake Clingan.
Clingan has never punted in an NFL game, but he averaged 39.9 yards in four seasons at Central Florida from 2007-10. The Lions announced the move Tuesday.
Detroit ranked last in the league in yards per punt last season. Ben Graham hurt his left calf in a September loss at Tennessee, forcing kicker Jason Hanson to take over during...
Analyst: 10-step plan for the Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is on the clock.
Mayhew's future arguably could be determined by what he does over the next seven weeks. Can he repair his team's roster and give coach Jim Schwartz an improved lineup after they plummeted from 10-6 in 2011 to 4-12 last year?
The Lions have so many needs, from a pass-rush threat to playmakers in the secondary to...

Scott talks Browns, free agency, trust and more – WFNY Podcast – 2013-03-07
The third podcast of the week and finally I gave Scott the chance to break down a few things. The idea was to give Scott the reigns to talk about MIT. I ended up feeling like I talked more than ever on one of these things. I don’t know if I should let you in on my secret, but the key to this whole podcasting thing is kind of just getting out of the way sometimes. (Shh. Don’t...

Joe Banner lengthens theoretical leash on Mike Lombardi to bring Ray Farmer on board as Assistant GM
So Joe Banner didn’t trust Mike Lombardi enough to name him the Browns General Manager when he hired Lombardi as VP of Player Personnel about a month ago, but had to let go of this carrot stick on Tuesday and start calling Lombardi a GM anyway because the title change was somehow necessary to bringing Ray Farmer over from the Chiefs to be the Browns’ new Assistant GM.
The Plain...
Banner Report: The Quarterbacks
You may remember back in 2010 (you know the last time there was a complete overhaul in Berea) we wanted to give incoming President Mike Holmgren a hand evaluating the roster. We are nothing if not equal opportunity. The Browns have a completely new group in charge this year. Joe Banner, Mike Lombardi, Rob Chudzinski, Norv Turner and Ray Horton take over a 5-11 team. They have plenty...
