Detroit Lions Ink Star Quarterback To Massive Extension
Eric Seals / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions have completely changed the culture of the franchise in the past few years. This team was once the laughingstock of the NFL but now boasts one of the league’s most potent offenses. A big reason for the offensive explosion has been the play of Jared Goff. Many fans wondered what the team would do with the former number-one overall pick as he was entering the last year of his contract. He has more than earned an extension, and the team rewarded him with a massive contract on Monday.

Detroit Lions Extend QB Jared Goff

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the deal is a four-year, $212 million extension with a $170 million guaranteed. He crosses the $50 million per year threshold in this massive deal. During his time with the Detroit Lions, Jared Goff has thrown for 12,258 yards and 78 touchdowns. More importantly, he has only thrown 27 interceptions, keeping his interception rate below two percent.

The Detroit Lions have made it no secret they wanted Goff to be with the franchise long-term. Four days ago, GM Brad Holmes made it clear extending their quarterback was a top priority. It seems they were simply figuring out the numbers. Goff is the latest in a string of players to get massive extensions this offseason.

Busy Offseason For Detroit

Jared Goff isn’t the only one who got paid this offseason. Right tackle Penei Sewell and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown also received top-of-the-market extensions. It signals that the team is trying to extend the window of excellence for this team. The offense has been a staple for this team for the past few years. Under offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions have consistently been a dangerous group.

For Detroit Lions fans, it was bittersweet when long time quarterback Matthew Stafford was traded to the Rams for Jared Goff. Now, that trade looks like one that has paid off for both teams. Many thought Goff was done in the league but this coaching staff revitalized him. He got the extension and now hopes to get the city of Detroit their first Super Bowl.
