Jim Schwartz told the media the Detroit Lions are not rebuilding. Let’s not get this confused with 2009, the Lions aren’t coming off an 0-16 season. How could you even consider rebuilding when stars like Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh are signed? “I wouldn’t call it rebuilding,” Schwartz said Thursday. “There’s been a lot of other words used for it: ‘reloading,’ whatever you want to call it. But when you say ‘rebuilding,’ it sounds like you’re starting from the ground up.” The Lions have the chance to add another piece to the puzzle as they hold the No... Read more

  • its been since 1957,that the lions have won anything, bill ford has the money, not willing to hire good people, after all don shula was available years ago
  • If "rebuilding" means getting rid of the idiot coach, I am all for it. Fird is a complete worthless owner, in my opinion he cares nothing about the team.
The coin is there to get good players and coaches but doesnt.
A coach that doesnt know the rules enough to not throw a flag on a auto reviewed play shouldnt be there.
He should be coaching a peewee flag football team, they dont usually keep track of wins/losses and scores - he would be fine!

Lions C Dominic Raiola Does Not Receive Endorsement From Jim Schwartz, Martin Mayhew

Lions center Dominic Raiola probably would not have objected to an endorsement from coach Jim Schwartz or general manager Martin Mayhew today. The 34-year old center just completed his 12th NFL season. Raiola was solid last season, but according to ProFootballFocus, he allowed 12 quarterback hurries, eighth most in the NFL. When asked about Raiola's future, Schwartz did...

Crucial offseason for Lions GM

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has a difficult job this offseason: trying to figure out exactly how to put a winning product back on the field next season. Hes already gotten rid of his problem-child receiver, Titus Young, and started to create some space under the salary cap by dumping more than 8 million with the release of defensive end Kyle...

Lions’ GM looking to give Mathew Stafford an extension

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has indicated that they’re going to look to extend quarterback Mathew Stafford’s contract. Stafford’s contract will reportedly eat up $20 million under the Lions’ cap for next season.  If they extend his contract, they’ll create more cap room. “My thought on that is that we’re going to try to extend him,” said Stafford...

Lions Want To Extend QB Matthew Stafford, But Contract Talks In Infancy

The Lions’ next big move of the off-season could be giving Matthew Stafford a new deal worth $100 million or more, but general manager Martin Mayhew said today contract discussions with his quarterback are still in their infancy. “My thought on that is that we’re going to try to extend him,” Mayhew said. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of dialogue about it at this point,...

Lions cut Titus Young to remove a 'distraction'

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz says receiver Titus Young was released to get rid of a distraction. Schwartz also said Thursday that cutting defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and guard Stephen Peterman was strictly business. Detroit cut ties with Young on Monday and the St. Louis Rams claimed him off waivers the next day. The 2011 second-round pick was banished from the Lions three...

Lions GM Martin Mayhew Not Concerned About Losing DE Cliff Avril In Free Agency

The Detroit Lions are running out of bodies at defensive end. Detroit released defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch earlier this week as a cost-cutting measure. Meanwhile, Lions defensive ends Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson are unrestricted free agents, leaving Detroit with few options at outside pass rusher. Avril received the team's franchise tag last year, but Lions general...

Lions GM 'Cautiously Optimistic' OT Jeff Backus, PK Jason Hanson Will Return

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he remains "cautiously optimistic" Jeff Backus will be back next season. The veteran left tackle has one year remaining on the two-year deal he signed last offseason. The Lions are also waiting to hear from Hanson on his future. Mayhew expressed the same cautious optimism his kicker would be back in 2013. Unlike Backus,...

Detroit Lions are hoping to extend QB Matthew Stafford

The Detroit Lions are starting to purge their roster as the league prepares to roll into the free agency portion of the year. The Lions could use some help via free agency, but they are currently trying to clear up some salary cap issues. Last week, the team parted ways with veteran defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and they are hoping to enter talks with quarterback Matthew Stafford...

Lions GM Martin Mayhew Looking To Bring In Players With Leadership Qualities

Detroit's lack of leadership was clearly evident during last year's 4-12 season. While quarterback Matthew Stafford and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh are good players, neither have firmly established themselves as tempo-setters. Detroit lacked a player willing to put the Lions on his back and demand excellence from everyone around him, like Ray Lewis, J.J. Watts, Brian Urlacher...

Lions GM: I’m willing to add Leaders to the team for 2013

The Detroit Lions suffered through an extremely disappointing 2012 NFL season. After making a playoff appearance in 2011, the Lions went just 4-12 and left many scratching their heads as to why. One of the issues with the team was discipline, and many point the finger at head coach Jim Schwartz for that. But the Lions [...]

The Lions go into this offseason with plenty of needs while head coach Jim Schwartz once again got to coach the Senior Bowl getting a firsthand look at potential draft prospects. By getting this chance the Lions need to take advantage by basing this draft on needs and abandon the best available strategy.  The best available strategy can work if you do it on identified needs. I...
