Last week: 22 (+1) Record: 1-1 I had the Lions much lower than most people to start the season because I thought they were one dimensional, had a bad defense, and a bad running game, and overall thought they were overall too reliant on their passing attack for wins (4 comebacks from 13+ points last year, an NFL record), which, by the way, was led by a quarterback who had a history of injury problems and who had only had one good year in the NFL. So far in 2012, Matt Stafford is 51 of 80 for (63.8%) for 585 yards (7.3 YPA), 2 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, and that doesn’t tell the whole story because a big chunk of those yards were garbage time yards. As a result, the Lions almost lost at home to the Rams and weren’t competitive in San Francisco (down by double figures throughout the 2nd half until a garbage time touchdown with 1:29 left in the game). At least Stafford hasn’t gotten hurt yet. Studs WR Calvin Johnson: 8 catches for 94 yards on 12 attempts on 33 pass snaps, 6.0 YAC ...

Lions not concerned with Stafford's slow start

ALLEN PARK, Mich. Matthew Stafford ranks No. 27 in the NFL in quarterback rating after the first two weeks. Not exactly what you would expect from the Detroit Lions franchise QB, even so early in the season, but hes not alone. One notch below him is none other than New Orleans Saints star Drew Brees. Stafford has a 73.2 rating, Brees 71.6. Me and Calvin (Johnson) were talking...

Detroit Lions stumble in San Francisco

It was Jim Harbaugh who got the better end of the handshake once again. An inspired defensive effort combined with undisciplined play by Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions added up to a 27-19 win in favor of San Francisco. The Lions made a late comeback to make the score interesting, but this game was controlled by the 49ers from start to finish.  San Francisco jumped out to...

Audio: Jim Schwartz, Matthew Stafford React to Detroit Lions’ Week 2 Loss

The Detroit Lions lamented missed opportunities following Sunday night's 27-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Continue reading →

San Francisco 49ers 27, Detroit Lions 19: Hunt Report

The Detroit Lions headed west, looking to keep their early season momentum going in a late night duel with the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately for them, they found a fist fight that they weren't ready for, and ran out of fourth quarter magic. The handshakes were perhaps the only successful thing about this west coast hunt, as the Lions went down hard and couldn't sustain...

Detroit Lions vs. Tennessee Titans: Three Bold Predictions

This week, the Detroit Lions head to Nashville to take on the 0-2 Titans. The Lions are coming off a tough loss to the 49ers, and Matthew Stafford needs to step up his performance against a Titans team ranked 20th against the pass. The Titans, however, have had more than one tough game. Their first two weeks have been a struggle, as the offense has failed to move the ball and the...

49ers defense silences Lions offensive attack

There were no handshake incidents this time around only a San Francisco defense standing tall in a 27-19 victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday night. The Lions’ vaunted pass offense was silenced by the San Francisco secondary as they held Calvin Johnson to eight catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns. And instead of relying on his number one target quarterback Matthew Stafford...

49ers defense shuts down Lions

The San Francisco 49ers stymied 2011 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, then record-setting Matthew Stafford in Week 2. This stingy, opportunistic defense is again making its mark as one of the league's best facing the top offenses and most prolific passers -- and that you can shake on. The Niners denied Stafford another milestone, Vernon Davis caught touchdown passes of 21 and...

Lions denied by stingy 49ers defense

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers stymied 2011 NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, then record-setting Matthew Stafford in Week 2. This stingy, opportunistic defense is again making its mark as one of the league's best facing the top offenses and most prolific passers -- and that you can shake on. Lions still struggling against NFL's elite

With a chance to take over sole possession of first place in the NFC North, the Detroit Lions had a hard time putting the ball in the end zone against San Francisco's tough defense. The 27-19 loss to the 49ers on Sunday night raised more questions about whether Detroit belongs among the NFL's elite. Last season, the Lions won 10 games, but none of their victories was against...

The Detroit Lions Lost, What Is The Positive Side?

If a win is a win, even a ugly in like the Detroit Lions had in week one, than a loss is a loss even when it is to a team that looks as good as the San Francisco 49ers. That is all fine and good, but in week two we here at DJC see way too much positive to give up on the Lions this soon. Even though there will be some in the fan base who feel that way after a loss on prime time TV...

49ers, Alex Smith Dominate Lions, Matthew Stafford

Alex Smith, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has heard things said about him that would make a grandmother shudder. From the moment he was drafted out of Utah, people screamed that he was a system quarterback, and that his success was largely in part to Utah head coach Urban Meyer's spread offense. Even though some decried him as a traditional drop back quarterback...

49ers sitting at 2 and 0 after win over Lions

The Lions came into Candlestick and left with a L. The 49ers beat the Lions 27-19 and Alex Smith showed again that he is more than just a game manager. Alex Smith finished the day 20-31 for 226 and 2 touchdowns and outplayed Matthew Stafford, who the 49ers made look like a backup. Stafford came into the game throwing over 350 yards for five consecutive games. Today he left with 230...
