Yesterday, I said that there was no need to panic just yet about the fact that Eagles starting left guard Evan Mathis was paying a visit to the Baltimore Ravens. Why the Eagles didn’t move to lock up the one free agent they had to sign immediately is beyond me. But I trusted that things would work out.
Imagine my surprise this morning, then, when I saw the headline “Eagles helpless as Ravens woo Mathis” in the Inquirer. Um, excuse me? Helpless? Why–because you didn’t do anything?
I’m giving you all permission to panic. Hit the red button. Now.
Just before the start of free agency, I said that re-signing Mathis was a priority for the Birds.
OG Evan Mathis turned out to be a great signing last year by the Birds, and the o-lineman proved to play a critical part of the ultimate solidification of the line, which allowed for RB LeSean McCoy to have a record-breaking season. Mathis made the veteran league minimum last year so could not work out a new deal until the start of free agency.
