A few former University of Miami Hurricanes will square off Sunday in San Francisco in what will likely be one of the major match-ups of the battle between the Giants and 49ers.

San Francisco’s elusive running back Frank Gore has been unstoppable all season and a major factor in the 49ers 7-1 start.

Meanwhile, Giants’ safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips will look to shutdown Gore.

Rolle and Gore were teammates from 2001-2005 for the “U.” They matched up many times in practice and are familiar with each other’s style. Before last season, Rolle played with the Arizona Cardinals, so he saw Gore twice per season.

Phillips on the other hand arrived at Miami the fall season after Gore and Rolle had been drafted. Still, those Hurricane ties will be apparent on Sunday.

However, that’s fine before and after the game, but during the game, expect a heated battle.

Both teams are vying for a position close to the top of the NFC, and college friendships won’t interfere with these players’ goals.

Gore has been breaking off long runs deep into the opposing defense’s secondary all season, so Rolle and Phillips have to ensure that if Gore does break off a big gain, it isn’t turned into a huge gain.

If the Giants defense can limit Gore, they’ll force Alex Smith to make plays. Even though his team is 7-1, Smith is always prone to making a key mistake.

These players won’t be the only faces from the University of Miami on display, but they have the greatest potential to impact the game.

So while these three may cherish their days as Hurricanes, on Sunday it’s all about Giants and 49ers.
