2011 Recap:  Kevin Smith was sitting around playing PS3 when the Lions brought him back to the team after Jahvid Best suffered another massive concussion.  He looked more agile and had better lateral movement then the last time he was in the NFL.  In his first start he totaled over 200 yards and scored 3 TDs.  Then he had a high ankle sprain and hamstring injury, typical for Smith.  In only 7 games he totaled over 500 total yards, 22 receptions, and scored 7 TDs.  He was the 11th best RB in fantasy points per game.

What’s Changed:  The Lions would like to run the ball more in 2012.  The problem is Jahvid Best is on the PUP right now and is one hit away from being out of the NFL.  The Jersey LeShoure is coming back from a torn Achilles and has already suffered a leg injury and will miss the first 2 games of the season.

Outlook:  Look, the Lions would probably like to run their backfield like the Saints if it was up to them.  The problem is their RBs are a walking infirmary.  Kevin Smith is no different.  The difference is that Smith has been forgotten in fantasy circles and can be had for next to nothing in drafts.  He’s the cheapest option on the team and as we saw last season, the Lions RBs have tremendous fantasy value, especially in PPR leagues.  If you are looking for a late round hit, Kevin Smith should be firmly on your radar.

Broyles, who was taken off the physically unable to perform list on...

Detroit Lions Running Back Situation Remains Clouded

The Detroit Lions front office told reporters at the start of this month that they were content with their roster at the running back position. As July comes to a close and training camps are finally open, perhaps the Lions will have to reevaluate the position moving forward. I recently penned a column about which NFL teams that would frustrate fantasy football owners this season...

Lions might use Logan at running back

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- With Mikel Leshoure coming off surgery for a torn Achilles and Jahvid Bests uncertain future because of concussion problems, the Detroit Lions desperately need contingency plans at running back. One of those options from within is moving diminutive receiverreturn specialist Stefan Logan to fill a versatile role as sort of a poor mans Darren Sproles out of the...

Detroit Lions Training Camp Preview: Five Things to Watch in Allen Park

It's that time of the football year once again. The time that veteran NFL'ers hate, rookies learn to hate and fans enjoy. It's training camp, the pad pushing, drill barking start to every football season's long journey that hopefully concludes with a Super Bowl. After last year's 10-6 record and playoff appearance, the Detroit Lions enter 2012 camp with plenty...

Lions' Stafford tries to prove 2011 was no fluke

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford quieted most of his critics last year. Now he needs to silence them. There were serious doubts at this time a year ago whether Stafford could stay healthy long enough to showcase his elite arm in the NFL. But he showed that he could, playing through a hand injury and starting every game while leading his team to the...

Suh looks to rebound from dissapointing 2011 season

ALLEN PARK, Mich. Ndamukong Suh has Hall of Fame potential, but will he fulfill it? He appeared to be on the fast track during his rookie year only to take a step back last season. How he performs in this his third year quite possibly will indicate which is the real Suh, and whether hes going to live up to the hype generated by being the No. 2 pick overall in the 2010 Draft. ...

Lions Camp: Best Sits, Team Gets iPads

As Jahvid Best was forced to sit, his teammates replaced their playbook binders with iPads. But according to Chris Houston, it's all work and no play. "You can’t play no Angry Birds, no internet, none of that,” joked the veteran cornerback. The technology also left WR Nate Burleson feeling a bit ... old. More inside ...
