The old saying is always “it isn’t the crime, it’s the cover-up.”  That seems to be what has happened to the New Orleans Saints, as they kept lying to NFL and commissioner Goodell as the investigation into Bountygate continued.

Mike Florio reports that Goodell informed everyone that the Saints did themselves no service, including head coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis, who both begin their suspensions on April:

“It’s a violation of a very serious rule,” Goodell said today. “We have made player health and safety very clear as a priority. I have addressed it with owners, head coaches, general managers and all of our personnel several times a year. When this first was raised over two years ago, there were denials. They frankly were not forthright with what was happening. And that continued, and it continued even through our investigation into the past several weeks. So it’s a serious violation of our policy. It is something that has zero tolerance in the NFL. It’s not acceptable to hide the issues, continue to violate NFL policy, put our players at risk. That’s going to be dealt with very harshly.”

This isn’t too shocking, as once lies begin, they are almost impossible to stop. The first lie is told because one doesn’t want to accept the reality and consequences for their initial actions, and that is why individuals and groups continue the lie. Goodell isn’t naive to this, stating that he knows the practice has gone on elsewhere, but his plan is to have it stopped.
