Lost in the news of the Clay Matthews deal, the Green Bay Packers breathed a sigh of relief on Friday Night when the deadline for teams to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets passed because it means cornerback Sam Shields is almost guaranteed to return to the team for the 2013 season.
According the PackersNews.com, which cites an NFL source, Shields did not sign an offer sheet with another NFL team before the deadline, so at this point he will have no choice but to sign the restricted free agent offer the Packers tendered him earlier this offseason.
Green Bay gave Shields, a third-year cornerback from the University of Miami, was given the second-round tender, which would pay him $2.023 million this season. The Packers also would have received a second-round pick as compensation had another team signed Shields to an offer sheet and the Packers chose not to match,
Shields was undrafted out of college and signed with the Packers as a free agent. Yet he has sub 4.4 speed and af...

Before I start, I want to state that I am a huge Clay Matthews fan. Who doesn't love him in the Fathead commercials and his sack celebrations? With that being said, sports contracts shouldn't be about how much you like a player. At the end of the day, franchises are businesses and players should be viewed as assets/liabilities.Matthews signed his new contract with $69.77...
Since winning the super Bowl in 2010, the Green Bay Packers have slowly gained a reputation for being soft, just a finesse team.

According to Bob McGinn of JSonline.com, the upcoming draft is important in reversing...

The Green Bay Packers have high hopes going in to 2013.While they watched Greg Jennings, Tom Crabtree, and Donald Driver all leave their high-powered offense and saw one of their main cogs on defense, Charles Woodson, also leave, they have a wonderful foundation for continued success.Only two full seasons removed from a Super Bowl win and a year removed from a 15-win season, the...

Green Bay made Clay Matthews the highest paid LB in the NFL on Wednesday by signing him to a 5-year, $66 million extension. The deal locks up a huge piece to the Packers’ puzzle and retains an integral part of a defense that has at times lacked consistency.
On a team where the number one concern is the lack of a pass rush, paying arguably the NFL’s best linebacker over $13...

The 2013 NFL schedule is out and this year’s slate of games is probably the most unique and potentially challenging the Packers have seen in a long time.
A fast start may be a challenge for Coach McCarthy’s team
The schedule is unique for its lack of any long road trips or homestands. The Packers only have consecutive games at home once – in Week 9 (Chicago) and Week 10 (Philadelphia...

We examine the Packers' depth chart, their draft history under general manager Thompson and the first-round possibilities at wide receiver, which is a position of need with the losses of Greg Jennings and Donald Driver.
For all those Green Bay Packer fans who have criticized Ted Thompson for being a cheapskate over the years, the five-year $66 million deal given to Clay Matthews yesterday should prove once and for all that he's not -- it also proves that he knows how to build a winner.
