As the Lions have risen back into the ranks of the relevant I find myself rooting for certain individuals as well as the team. While it was nice to see guys like Jeff Backus and Dominic Raiola experience a winning atmosphere for the first time in their careers, I felt particularly good for Jason Hanson. Hanson had been to the playoffs with the Lions before and while the saying goes “it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all”, you have to wonder if Jason Hanson thought he’d ever get to “love” with the Lions again. Fortunately, Hanson entered training camp healthy and beat out Dave Rayner for the Lions’ kicking duties. Even after a successful 20th NFL season, Jason Hanson is willing to keep fighting for his job. … [visit site to read more] Jason Hanson Deserves Incumbent Status Heading into Next Season - SideLion Report - SideLion Report - A Detroit Lions Fan Site - News, Blogs, Opinion and more.

Jason Hanson ready to fight for his job -- again

Lions kicker Jason Hanson has been in the NFL too long to mince words. Hanson just completed his 20th season and tells it like it is when discussing the competition he expects for his job next season.

Detroit Lions’ Martin Mayhew Speaks!

Detroit Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew, who lives by the Teddy Roosevelt credo of speaking softly but carrying a big stick, spoke to the media last week. Mayhew is almost as hard to get an interview with as Bigfoot. Has there ever been a General Manager in this town more reclusive than Mayhew? Now that the offseason is upon us, except for the Super Bowl, it’s Mayhew’...

Updates: Old Mother Hubbard, Bleacher Report, Detroit Lions, Liverpool

So, you’re probably wondering where the promised Old Mother Hubbard stuff is. This is a good wondering! I’m trying to use some advanced data visualization software instead of Excel charts, and the software is throwing me a learning curveball. I’ll revert to the regular old radar charts if I have to, but I’d really like to deliver on this. Second, my Bleacher Report duties...

The Lions have the 23rd pick in upcoming 2012 NFL Draft

Winning changes everything. The Detroit Lions, who were no strangers to drafting higher up in the first round, will have the 23rd pick this year. The biggest areas the Lions need to strengthen are their abilities to stop the run and to improve their secondary. Things can change at any moment between now and the draft. In Mel Kiper’s 2012 mock draft, he predicts the Lions will pick...

Detroit Lions: offseason needs

If I said the Lions need to go out and get a quarterback this offseason, even the biggest bandwagon-jumper would be able to remind me of the season Matthew Stafford just had.  Stafford’s 5,000+ yards passing and 41 touchdowns were both Lion records, but it is in fact true that one of the Lions’ more pressing offseason needs is at the quarterback position. Stafford had the best...

Will the Detroit Lions Carry Three Quarterbacks Again in 2012?

I was surprised when I read in a post by Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett that only 14 teams in the NFL carried three quarterbacks for the entire season. I understand that each spot is vitally important to get right and that a team may need to fudge the QB depth chart to secure a needed player in another position. But there’s a reason you hear corporate types in other businesses...

Lions defensive end Cliff Avril said Tuesday he'd be willing to make a position switch to linebacker. Avril, a free agent this offseason, was a guest on "Detroit Man's Room," an affiliate of blogtalkradio.com. "I feel like I'm an athlete; I can do a lot of different things to help the team out," Avril said. "Just a different look here and there...
