According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune the Saints are not planning to open talks with Jermon Bushrod, who is heading into a contract year, before the season. On the surface, Bushrod is a valuable member of the Saints’ offense. He has allowed just 7 sacks in the last 2 seasons on one of the league’s most pass heavy offenses and made the Pro-Bowl last year. Pro-Bowl offensive tackles are rarely allowed to hit the open market, almost as rarely as Pro-Bowl quarterbacks. However, while Bushrod has one of the most important blindsides in the NFL to protect, he also has one of the easiest. Drew Brees doesn’t quite have Peyton Manning’s legendary pocket presence, but he’s pretty close. He essentially protects his own blindside with how well he feels the pass rush and how quickly he makes decisions and releases the ball. Brees has only taken a sack 82 times in the last 4 years on 674 pressured drop backs (12.2%), the best rate in the league over that period by who has played in all 4 se...

Brees lifts Clark from anonymity to NFL

Marques Clark stopped playing organized football when his eligibility with Division II Henderson State ran out in 2006. Drew Brees helped him get his first shot in the NFL this month. It just so happens that Brees does offseason throwing at a San Diego-area high school where Clark got a job about two years ago as a wide receivers coach. Brees noticed Clark working out there and...

Saints praise Brees' fitness in opening practice

A semblance of normalcy has returned to the New Orleans Saints, who started practicing Thursday with recently re-signed star quarterback Drew Brees back on the field. Brees even decided his first practice following a months-long contract holdout was as good a time as any to throw deep. ''I said, `Hey, we're going throw some balls down the field that maybe we shouldn...

Saints greeted by image of Payton

The last thing Pierre Thomas expected to see was suspended head coach Sean Payton staring him down the moment he walked into the Saints' indoor field. ''My first word that came out of my mouth was, `Wow.' Then I said, `He's mad,''' Thomas said Friday evening, following the second practice of training camp. ''That's the Payton look. He...

Saints extend P Morstead 6 years, $21.9 million

The agent for Thomas Morstead says the Saints' punter and kickoff specialist has agreed to a six-year extension worth $21.9 million. Vann McElroy says the deal pays Morstead an average of $3.65 million during the final six years of what now becomes a seven-year deal running through the 2018 season. That would make Morstead the second-highest paid punter in the NFL behind Oakland...

Saints Nation: Saints Give Thomas Morstead Enormous Contract

Serious cap problems coming as soon as 2013 didn't stop Mickey Loomis from making a massive investment in the team's star punter Thomas Morstead. Morstead's contract extension is good for 6 years at $21.9 million, although only just less than $7 million is guaranteed. Unless his contract gets cut short, then, he'll be a Saint for the next 7 years. Morstead's contract...

Huge Sean Payton picture hangs over Saints facility

He may be gone for the upcoming season, but suspended coach Sean Payton definitely is not forgotten. How could he be, when there's a self-portrait literally hanging over the Saints' collective heads? As FOX reporter Jennifer Hale shared via Twitter, the team on Friday added a giant-sized picture of Payton atop their indoor training facility. The picture features a serious...

Saints greeted byimage of Payton's glare

An intense greeting from suspended head coach Sean Payton awaits Saints players as they enter their indoor practice field. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt says the massive mural of Payton's pursed-lip, squinted-eye glare, which was hung before Friday's second practice of training camp, resembles a look every assistant coach and player has gotten when their performances started...

Saints Nation: Adrian Arrington Not Going Away Easily So Far in Camp

It's still very early in camp but all accounts suggest Adrian Arrington is having a fantastic one so far. The departure of Robert Meachem to the Chargers this offseason has opened the door wide for someone to step up and become the Saints' fourth receiver. Arrington's ability to hang around the roster appeared to be coming to an end with the emergence of Joe Morgan last...

NFL disputes report of Vilma offer

The NFL calls a report it has offered a settlement and reduced suspension to Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma ''completely inaccurate.'' Vilma has been suspended for the 2012 season for his role in the Saints bounty program, which he adamantly has claimed did not exist. Citing anonymous sources, ESPN.com reported the league offered Vilma an eight-game suspension...

Mark Ingram reportedly looks healthy in Saints camp

AP Photo According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Saints running back Mark Ingram “looked pretty much full blast” on day one of training camp.  This is great news since he had another knee scope this offseason. If Ingram can stay healthy this season, he would be another weapon on a team that’s loaded once again. Holder also said that running back Chris...

Saints unveil statue of Gleason punt block

The blocked punt that etched Steve Gleason into Saints lore and became symbolic of New Orleans' resilience in the face of disaster is now immortalized in a nine-foot statue outside the Superdome. ''That statue is not about football,'' Gleason, straining to speak because of the effects of ALS, said moments before the formal unveiling on a rain-soaked Friday afternoon...
