NEW ORLEANS -- San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't seem particularly worried about outside linebacker Aldon Smith's sack drought heading in Super Bowl XLVII. Smith finished second in the NFL behind Houston's J.J. Watt with 19.5 sacks during the regular season, but hasn't logged one since Week 14. Part of his failure to get to the quarterback could be attributed to injured defensive end Justin Smith's absence late in the year. Justin Smith returned for the postseason, and if his injured elbow/triceps continues to strengthen with two weeks between games it could help the defense's ability to pressure Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on Sunday. "Justin not being in there plays a part in (sacks)," Harbaugh said Monday. "We love having Justin in there. The play of Aldon has been really good. He played the run really well (against Atlanta). Sacks are the low-hanging fruit that you see. They don't always see the other thing...

What are the best landing spots for Alex Smith?

Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback turned clipboard holder due to Colin Kaepernick’s stunning success, will reportedly request to be released before the start of free agency rather than wait to be traded, according to Pro Football Talk. It’s not surprising the 29-year-old former No. 1 draft pick wants to retake the wheel after losing his starting job...

Report: Smith likely to request release

The San Francisco 49ers' former starting quarterback Alex Smith is expected to seek his release before free agency, according to Pro Football Talk. Smith, who lost the starting job to Colin Kaepernick in Week 10, would prefer to be released so he can garner the full benefits of free agency, the report says. The 49ers aren't likely to release Smith because of his value in...

49ers' Alex Smith is asking for his release

Word is out that 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is asking for his release from the team. The news comes from Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com. The news comes as no surprise, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the 49ers grant his request.I wrote last week about how the Chiefs should go after Smith. But if Smith opts for free agency, that could open up things a bit. You'll...

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York wants to retain Alex Smith

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is a happy camper when it comes to his quarterback situation. Why shouldn’t he be? It was the one-two punch of Alex Smith and Colin Kapernick that led his team to the threshold of the promised land. Unlike others that  have already stated that Smith is on the first thing smoking out of Dodge City, York is holding on to a belief that he can retain...

49ers respond to Obama's concerns

Aldon Smith was among several players preparing for the Super Bowl who doesn't see anything wrong with their kids playing football. Responding to President Obama's comments questioning the safety of the game, the 49ers' All-Pro linebacker and a few teammates said they'd allow their sons to follow them into the sport. ''It's not like we signed up and...

Some Browns bits on Alex Smith, Leroy Hoard, Ray Horton, Ozzie Newsome and more

There’s not one topic I feel like talking about today as we endure a week of Super Bowl and Hall of Fame propoganda. The Browns introduced their defensive coordinator Ray Horton yesterday, but even that was putting a cap on old news. With that in mind, I thought I would just combine a bunch of things into one post today… Alex Smith to the Browns? So Brandon Weeden thought he...

NFL Defensive Player of the Year: Who Should/Will Win?

Withe the regular season in the books and only one game left to play, I figured this would be a good time to discuss the major awards for the 2012 season and who should win them, as well as who will. I’m a defense guy, so I think I’ll kick off this series with the defensive player of the year. First, the candidates. Aldon Smith, OLB, San Francisco 49ers After a stellar season...

Nervous? 49ers? Don't tell them

Technically, the San Francisco 49ers are the home team in Super Bowl XLVII, and as grand arrivals go, their landing in New Orleans on an unseasonably warm Sunday evening was rather calm and unassuming. Players casually walked off the team plane dressed in casual attire, minus handheld video recorders recording the moment. Nobody waved to the crowd. They offered no real hint of the...

49ers, Harbaugh brothers respond to President Obama’s comments about football safety

As you may have heard, Barack Obama made some significant comments about football safety over the weekend that’s gotten a ton of publicity in the media. Here’s what Obama told the New Republic: I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football. And I think that those of us who love the sport are...

2013 NFL Superbowl Mock Draft : Matt

1. Kansas City Chiefs: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia - I still think they would be wiser to draft Lotulelei, but there's more of a chance they'll reach for a QB here. I was leaning towards Wilson as the top QB in recent weeks, but his senior bowl performance proved him completely unworthy of a first round selection, even in this weak QB class. 2. Jacksonville Jaguars...
