Matt Cassel is under fire right now in Kansas City.
After four sub par seasons at best, it seems that Chiefs faithful and his teammates have grown tired of the act.
According to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, the only supporter Cassel has left in the organization is head coach Romeo Crennel.
Sources say if the Chiefs had a better option at backup than Brady Quinn, Cassel would have been benched.
“Look, there’s a big reason why they went after Peyton Manning as hard as they did this offseason,” said a source with knowledge of Chiefs president Scott Pioli’s thinking. “What you’re seeing from Cassel is pretty much what was expected. He’s a really nice backup, not a starter.”
Cassel has five touchdowns and seven interceptions, with 70.4 passer rating.
Those numbers only est two rookies, Brandon Weeden, and Ryan Tannehill, and two other veterans, Mark Sanchez and Jay Cutler.
Crennel who said he was tempted to make a switch, feels the need to stay with Cassel.
“I could have taken (running back Jamaal) Charles out because of his struggles and his problems, but he’s also the one who can run for a touchdown,” Crennel said. “(Those are) some of the decisions a head coach has to make and you have to go with your gut feeling, and what you know about your team and then move forward with it.”
Romeo Crennel will support Matt Cassel until it starts to affect his own job status.
Then it’s every man for himself.
