Incredibly sad news came out of Kansas City, Missouri this morning that Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend, drove to the team’s practice facility, then took his own life, as reported by Jason La Canfora. KCPD is also saying that Belcher took his life after a conversation with head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli. Belcher was an undrafted fourth-year player out of Maine that rose through the ranks to become one of the team’s starting linebackers. He had 38 tackles on the season. His girlfriend and him leave behind a newborn child. Both Crennel and Pioli have past ties to the Browns organization. Crennel coached the Browns from 2005-2008 and was defensive coordinator prior to that in 2000. Pioli worked in the pro personnel department for the Browns from 1992-1995. Both have been under job security pressure due to the team’s 1-10 record. The Chiefs are scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers tomorrow afternoon, and the Panthers reportedly were instructed by the league to make the trip. If tomorrow’s game is instead cancelled, the Chiefs next game would be next Sunday in Cleveland. Thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in this tragic story.
