EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Leslie Frazier finally confirmed Friday what everyone had been expecting: Matt Cassel will start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
The move also signals the end to Christian Ponder's time as Minnesota's starter.
Cassel sparked the Vikings to their first win of the season in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in place of Ponder, who was dealing with a fractured rib. After the bye week, Ponder returned to practice and has been deemed healthy to play, but Frazier is sticking with Cassel. Ponder will be the backup Sunday when Minnesota (1-3) hosts Carolina (1-3).
"We made a decision, really probably couple of days ago, when I was thinking about our quarterback situation and how we were going to handle it," Frazier said.
