London is home to some of the biggest sporting events in the world, but the best may be yet to come for England's capital.

London has hosted the Olympic Games and is the site of Wimbledon, the premier tournament in tennis. England also has one of the most popular football leagues in the world (as in soccer), but New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft says it's time to add one more sport in Great Britain -- American football.

Kraft, one of the most respected owners in the NFL, shared his view as his team prepared to take on the St. Louis Rams at Wembley Stadium.

"You're already hosting the Premier League, and we believe we're the premier sport in the world," Kraft said at an NFL FanFest event at Trafalgar Square. "I think London has shown, with the way they've handled the Olympics and every other major sporting event, that it's time for you to have your own NFL franchise, based in London."

The NFL has experimented with overseas franchises before. The league developed NFL Europe, which closed its doors in 2007.

Kraft also had interesting thoughts about who the London crowds would be rooting for.

"These people out here make us feel that this is a home game -- New England is coming back to England," he said.

He did not mention anything about that revolution that happened back when New England first got its name, and whether that could complicate the rooting interests.

5 Comments:
  • It would be very succesful if Robert Kraft owned the team as compared to Jerry Jones for example....then it would be circus clown deal
  • Dumb, dumb, dumb! The statement is propably hype, but Seattle has the longest travel schedule right now and a London team would easily have the longest.

The only way it works right now, is having the two teams play before the bye-week.

Clearly the NFL doesn't care about player safety. Londoners don't care about American Football.

NFL, when will enough money be enough?
  • Right, and what division would the team be in? How many teams would want to fly to London to play or vice versa?
  • I'm sure all of the West Coast NFL owners will be thrilled about the cost of traveling 5000 miles, and their players will just love the jet lag they have for the next game

Week 8 Preview – St. Louis Rams vs. New England Patriots

I am having Déjà vu. Upon completion of my research, I have written this preview before. See if any of this sounds familiar. The Rams need to be able to run the ball, or at least threaten the run to have offensive success. Turns out, the Patriots strength on defense is against the run.  They are 8th against the run, allowing only 86 yards a game. The Patriots weakness...
