NFL injury updates for Week 1

Associated Press  |  Last updated September 06, 2013
The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without starting tight end Marcedes Lewis for Sunday's season opener against Kansas City. Coach Gus Bradley ruled out Lewis on Friday following his third consecutive missed practice. Lewis initially injured his left calf in warm-ups before the team's second preseason game, Aug. 17 at the New York Jets. He missed the final three exhibition games. He was full go and felt good Monday, but tweaked his calf early in practice Wednesday. Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams has been ruled out for the season opener Sunday against Detroit. Coach Leslie Frazier said on Friday that Williams was not able to practice all week. The coach believes his star defensive tackle is close to returning, but not quite ready to play. Williams suffered a bone bruise and hyperextension in his knee against San Francisco in the Vikings' third preseason game. Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert is questionable for Sunday's season opener against Kansas City. Although Gabbert practiced for the fourth consecutive day without any setbacks Friday, coach Gus Bradley says his status will be a game-day decision. Gabbert is recovering from a hairline fracture in his right thumb. He missed the final two preseason games because of the injury and has been dealing with pain and a weakened grip. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Pat Angerer didn't practice Friday because of a concussion suffered almost a week ago. Angerer, who is listed day-to-day, said he suffered the concussion during a hit in Indy's final preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday. He says he thought the symptoms would go away. Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Angerer was evaluated by the team's medical staff Thursday and learned the symptoms were linked to those of a concussion. If he's not ready for Sunday's season opener against the Oakland Raiders, Pagano said Kelvin Sheppard will start at linebacker.
