Fox Sports Arizona:
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Most of the Arizona State football team is far too young to remember the last time Pat Tillman donned the maroon and gold, but they'll get a vivid reminder of the late linebacker every time they take the field this season at Sun Devil Stadium.
ASU revealed a renovated Tillman Tunnel on Wednesday, including a gate at the end of the tunnel that features the image of Tillman walking onto the field.
"The way Pat lived -- the Sun Devil way -- is something we teach our team about every day," coach Todd Graham said. "Now the final thing they will see before taking the field is the embodiment of everything he stood for -- and everything we hope to emulate and accomplish."
The changes to Tillman Tunnel, which was dedicated to Tillman in 2004 following his death in Afghanistan in April 2004 while serving in the U.S. Army, can be seen here. The updates include the phrases "One goal: Champions" and "Play like a champion."
When ASU players exit the locker room to head to the field they pass through maroon double doors with "Tillman Tunnel" above them. Now at the end of the tunnel is Tillman's image, and above it is a 90-inch TV that will play highlights of Tillman's days at Arizona State from 1994-97.
Tillman's legacy has been celebrated at ASU a great deal since his death. His jersey number 42 is retired, and ASU's jerseys include a "PT-42" patch. Graham has put even greater emphasis on Tillman's legacy, having his image placed on multiple walls in ASU's athletics building and creating a camouflage No. 42 practice jersey that players can earn for excellence on and off the field.
BEST OF MAXIM
An image of Pat Tillman will lead Arizona State players onto the field for every home game. This is an awesome move by the university to not only pay tribute to one of their alumni/war hero, but to also remind players of the values of courage and honor represented by Mr. Tillman. Nicely done. Pat Tillman was an Arizona Cardinals safety until enlisting in the armed forces in the...
The Arizona State Sun Devils don’t have to look far to find inspiration before each home game.
On Wednesday, the ASU equipment staff tweeted out the entrance to the football field from the Sun Devils tunnel. The entrance has a life-size photo of former ASU Sun Devil Pat Tillman walking onto the gridiron to make it look like the late Army Ranger leading the squad onto the field...
College football programs do all kinds of cool stuff to get players pumped to take the field.
There's Howard's Rock at Clemson and Notre Dame's "Play Like A Champion Today" sign. Purdue wheels out a big ol' drum, Auburn has the War Eagle, Oklahoma has the Sooner Schooner and FSU has Chief Osceola and Renegade, one of several man-on-horse combinations that...
The Arizona State football team will now have the inspiration of Pat Tillman, an ASU grad and Arizona Cardinals player from 1998-2001, when he turned down a contract offer of $3.6 million over three years after the season to enlist in the Army in 2002. He was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. The ‘Tillman Tunnel’ was installed this season to lead players on to the field before a...
With the college football season in full swing, it’s always nice to see when teams recognize that the world is bigger than just football. CBS Sports reports that Arizona State has done just that by putting a portrait of former star LB and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Tillman was killed on duty in Afghanistan in 2004.
This is Todd Graham’s second season with the Sun Devils, and since...
This season, the doors leading from Arizona State University’s locker room tunnel onto the field turf will be decorated with decals depicting Pat Tillman walking out onto that same field. It’s a pretty great move by the school to honor not only one of their own, but also to pay homage to an American hero.
Tillman, who played safety for the Sun Devils before becoming one of the...
If Arizona State comes out of the locker room with a little extra passion and fury this fall I can't say I blame them. Last night, Pac-12 beat writer Doug Haller tweeted us a first look at the revamped "Tillman Tunnel" that runs onto the field at Sun Devil Stadium, complete with a new paint job, awning, and Pat Tillman memorial on the door. It's nice to see Arizona...
American hero Pat Tillman will lead his Sun Devils brethren onto the field before every Arizona State home game in the new Tillman Tunnel.
The Arizona State Sun Devils made a fantastic gesture to Pat Tillman and his family when they created this mural so that he would lead the team out onto the field for each game. Definitely one of the greatest gestures that a school has made in a long time.
Arizona State recently made some renovations to Sun Devil Stadium, and the Tillman Tunnel is now one of the best entrances in college football.Here...
Tweet Pat Tillman gave up playing in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals to serve his country in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, turning down a $3.6 million contract to enlist with his brother in the U.S. Army. As most know, the story ends tragically as Tillman was killed by friendly fire […]
Pat Tillman has a legacy that extends beyond the football field. From 1994-1997, he was a star linebacker for Arizona State. After three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, Tillman enlisted in the United States Army, where he was tragically killed by friendly fire in 2004.
At his alma mater, his legacy has not been forgotten. The school has come up with a new way to make sure he’ll...
