Washington Redskins safety Phillip Thomas was held out of practice on Monday after experiencing soreness in his left foot. Head coach Jay Gruden confirmed that Thomas will have an MRI done to see what extent is the injury. The second-year safety re-injured his surgically repair foot during Saturday’s game vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Thomas missed all of last season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in the Redskins’ preseason opener vs. the Titans. Thomas returned to the field this spring with high hopes but, Thomas suffered a hamstring strain that kept him out of training camp for two weeks. “It’s a concern because it’s the same foot and he’s going to get it checked out again,” Gruden said. “It’s sore. It’s bothering him, and you can see it a little bit that it’s bothering him. We’ve got to get it fixed because he’s a good football player, and he’s got to get it healthy to play.” Thomas was drafted by the Redskins in the fourth round of 2013 NFL Draft with hopes of being a long-ter

DeAngelo Hall, sportswriter squabble on Twitter over Meriweather’s suspension

The Washington Redskins were none too please as an organization about the two-game suspension to safety Brandon Meriweather for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith. Following the NFL’s announcement of the suspension, some of the Redskins players took to Twitter to voice their frustration. Leading the way was cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who carried...

Washington Redskins move down in Power Rankings, sit near basement of the NFL

We know what we’re going to know. With training camps complete, three preseason games – including the “dress rehearsal” – in the books and veterans on the shelf until the regular season opener, the data needed to evaluate every NFL team prior to the start of the 2014 campaign is in the books. Some look ready to go, while others have work to do. A few franchises have emerged...

Twitter Tuesday: Reaction to Brandon Meriweather’s suspension

Everybody knows that Brandon Meriweather has a knack for illegal hits, but this is getting pretty ridiculous now. Meriweather was suspended yesterday for an “illegal hit” on Torrey Smith, which could have only been avoided if Meriweather simply didn’t tackle the receiver, but, unfortunately, that’s his job. While some of his past hits may have been uncalled for, this wasn’t...

Redskins opponent, Sen. Harry Reid, makes Asian jokes

Photo: politico.com The Washington Redskins name has been a hot topic on Capitol Hill this year. Nevada Democrat and U.S. Senate Majority leader, Harry Reid, has been at the forefront of trying to force the team to change their nickname. Reid proved to everyone, speaking at a luncheon put on by the Asian Chamber of Commerce, that even he can be “racist.” During his speech he...

Grading the Washington’s Redskins starting offense this preseason

While the Redskins defense may be improved from last year, it is the offense that will need to carry this team. There are more weapons in Washington right now than there have been in years. With DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon on the outside, along with Jordan Reed at tight end, Robert Griffin III actually has some legitimate targets to throw to. And that’s all without mentioning...

Tweet of the Game: Robert Griffin III was severely ineffective against the Ravens

I have a feeling Robert Griffin III wishes things went a little different last night. Maybe he’ll start taking shots at his “doubters” again? That said, for all the doubters he does have, he deserves them after last night’s performance. His decision making was not up to par, and he was simply ineffective. Take a look: Perfect example of RGIII decision-making. He runs out...

Brandon Meriweather suspended two games for hit

The NFL has suspended Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather for the first two games of the season after he delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith. Meriweather was flagged for a personal foul for his hit on Smith in the second quarter of Saturday’s 23-17 preseason loss.  Meriweather was suspended for two games last season...

Joe Theismann can’t seem to decide who should start at QB for the Redskins

Most people are wondering… what is going through Joe Theismann’s head? Not even a week ago he was informing the football nation (on television) that he believes Kirk Cousins deserves to be the starter over Robert Griffin III for the Washington Redskins. Now Theismann has come out and stated he believes Robert gives the Redskins the best chance to win going forward. After Cousins...

Could Brandon Meriweather be suspended for helmet-to-helmet hit?

Brandon Meriweather is no stranger to controversial hits. After sending Baltimore Ravens running back Bernard Pierce out the game for concussion tests with a solid hit, the Washington Redskins safety hit Ravens’ wide receiver Torrey Smith with a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit during Saturday’s preseason game. Meriweather was flagged 15 yards for the hit. Meriweather wasn’t pleased...

NFL Fails to Send Message in Suspension of Brandon Meriweather

As much as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would like us to believe that his primary goal has been to protect the shield during his tenure, the executive hasn’t necessarily taken many necessary steps to protect that shield.  The latest suspension of Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather for just two games following his most recent incident is a prime example of this. The...

LB Rob Jackson among 1st set of Redskins cuts

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) Veteran linebacker Rob Jackson is among the first set of players cut this week by the Washington Redskins as the team gets closer to setting its 53-man roster for the regular season. Jackson was a seventh-round draft pick in 2008 and played six seasons with the Redskins, mostly as a pass-rush specialist in spot duty. Fourteen of his 15 career starts came in 2012...

Sarah Palin sides with Mike Ditka in Redskins name debate

Sarah Palin has weighed in on the Washington Redskins nickname debate, and unsurprisingly the former Alaska governor and vice president nominee sides with Mike Ditka in believing the nickname should stay. Palin shared her thoughts on the nickname after being inspired by political commentator Rush Limbaugh, who predicted that Ditka could be fired by ESPN […]

Washington safety Brandon Meriweather suspended 2 games for illegal hit

The NFL has suspended Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather for the first two games of the regular season following an illegal hit on Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith in Saturday's exhibition game – Meriweather's sixth violation of player safety rules. Meriweather, 30, can appeal the suspension, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 1 and end two weeks later...

QB Robert Griffin III won't play in Washington's preseason finale

Robert Griffin III will get to sit out the final preseason game, after all. Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Tuesday he will rest his starters Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gruden had considered playing the first-team offense for a series or two because he didn't want to end the preseason ''on a sour note'' after the quarterback...
