Prominent NFL players who could be cut following training camp

Every NFL training camp has surprise roster moves for veterans and young players, alike. The following slideshow features 24 players who could be cut at the conclusion of training camp.

1 of 24

Nelson Agholor, WR, Eagles

The 20th overall pick in the 2015 draft, Agholor has looked mostly lost in his first two NFL seasons. After the Eagles signed Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith in the offseason, Agholor is left without a definitive role.

Roberto Aguayo, K, Buccaneers

Tampa Bay signed Nick Folk to compete with Aguayo in camp. They likely want their 2016 second-round pick to win the job, but he has to perform better than he did last year.

Danny Amendola, WR, Patriots

New England's wide receiver depth is bursting at the seams after adding Brandin Cooks and Andrew Hawkins. Amendola's ability to play as a returner certainly helps, but he needs to perform well in training camp.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Broncos

Charles is out to prove that he has something left after missing nearly all of 2016 due to injuries on both knees. Denver has a sizable role ready for Charles if he can prove he's healthy.

Sammie Coates, WR, Steelers

The return of Martavis Bryant from suspension puts Coates on the chopping block. While Coates showed flashes last season, he was unavailable for much of the year due to injuries.

Brian Cushing, ILB, Texans

The oft-injured Cushing was ineffective for much of last season, accumulating 65 tackles in 13 games. Offseason shoulder surgery also clouded his status.

Tamba Hali, OLB, Chiefs

Hali got limited snaps late last season and in the playoffs, and he probably didn't help his cause with a Twitter tirade one week before camp. Knee issues have slowed what was a once very productive pass rusher.

DeAngelo Hall, DB, Redskins

Hall is returning from a torn ACL at age 33, and any setbacks could force Washington's hand. He's played a total of 17 games over the last three seasons.

Carlos Hyde, RB, 49ers

The oft-injured Hyde has to prove himself to a new coaching staff after the 49ers hired Kyle Shanahan. The team has had significant competition, most notable rookie Joe Williams.

Chris Ivory, RB, Jaguars

Ivory was terrible in his first year of a lucrative contract with Jacksonville, pressing the Jaguars to draft Leonard Fournette. With T.J. Yeldon also likely ahead of Ivory on the depth chart, carving out a role could be difficult. If Ivory gets off to a slow start in training camp, the Jags could be looking to cut their losses.

Matt Jones, WR, Redskins

It's odd that Jones is still on the Washington roster after falling out of favor last season, becoming a healthy scratch during the second half of the season. Jones hired agent Drew Rosenhaus in early July, likely hoping to be cut or traded.

Dion Lewis, RB, Patriots

New England's running back additions in the offseason show a lack of confidence in Lewis' durability. He's played only seven games in each of the last two seasons, and currently sits as the likely fourth running back on the depth chart.

13 of 24

Ryan Mallett, QB, Ravens

Starting quarterback Joe Flacco suffered a back injury early in camp, so the Ravens can't afford to be without a reliable backup. While Mallett has always shown great arm strength, he struggled early in camp. Rumors of adding Colin Kaepernick have surfaced.

14 of 24

Ryan Mathews, RB, Eagles

Mathews is expected to be cut when he's medically cleared from a neck injury. Philadelphia is set at running back after adding LeGarrette Blount along with rookie Donnel Pumphrey.

15 of 24

Josh McCown, QB, Jets

McCown is trying to win the Jets starting job at age 38. If he somehow fails, the Jets don't have much reason to keep him around as they go through a rebuilding year.

16 of 24

Alfred Morris, RB, Cowboys

A former 1,600 yard rusher in Washington, Morris has seemed to decline with each season. He saw only 69 carries for Dallas last season, and could be further down the depth chart entering training camp.

17 of 24

Haloti Ngata, DT, Lions

Ngata is a big name because of his days in Baltimore, but his production over the last two years in Detroit has declined sharply. A situational player, the Lions could cut Ngata if he slows in camp at age 33.

18 of 24

Brock Osweiler, QB, Browns

Osweiler was traded from Houston to Cleveland as a salary dump in the offseason, and he will compete with Cody Kessler for the starting job. If Osweiler looks as bad as he did in Houston or rookie DeShone Kizer impresses, Cleveland could decide to move on from him before his Browns career really begins.

19 of 24

C.J. Spiller, RB, Chiefs

The Chiefs signed Spiller in the offseason before drafting Kareem Hunt. Spiller is likely competing with Charcandrick West for a roster spot, which isn't an impossible task, but the odds are against him as an oft-injured back who will soon turn 30.

20 of 24

Tajae Sharpe, WR, Texans

Sharpe was the talk of camp last year, but the fifth-round pick disappointed during the regular season. The additions of Eric Decker and Corey Davis, along with June foot surgery, could doom Sharpe.

21 of 24

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Panthers

Stewart is out to prove that he has something left at age 30 despite Carolina's drafting of Christian McCaffrey. Stewart had only 3.8 yards per carry last season, and his status could go either way depending on his training camp performance.

22 of 24

Ben Watson, TE, Ravens

Returning from a torn Achilles', Watson still has a chance to win the starting tight end job due to Dennis Pitta's career-threatening hip injury. Watson will also turn 37 this season, and there's no guarantee he will bounce back following such a major injury.

23 of 24

Jarius Wright, WR, Vikings

Minnesota addressed their wide receiver depth for the second straight year, this time adding Michael Floyd and two late-round draft choices. Wright had only 11 catches in eight games last year, and is clearly on the roster bubble.

24 of 24

Kendall Wright, WR, Bears

Wright had a 1,000 yard season early in his Titans career, but he fell out of favor in recent years. The Bears are hoping he can rehab his career on a one-year deal, but there should be no guarantees that Wright will make the roster.
