FootBasket:
The San Francisco 49ers currently have themselves what could be described as a good problem to have at the quarterback position.
Starting quarterback Alex Smith has been sidelined with a concussion, which opened the door for his backup Colin Kaepernick to step in and make his starting debut this past Monday night against the Chicago Bears.
Kaepernick didn’t just step in for Smith; he stepped up and on national television showed everyone just how good he could potentially be as a starting quarterback. The 49ers dominated the Bears and rolled to a 32-7 win with Kaepernick’s performance, which was apparently strong enough that it reportedly has head coach Jim Harbaugh leaning towards naming him as the starter going forward, even if Smith is healthy or not.
According to reports from Sports Illustrated and ESPN, Harbaugh is apparently giving Kaepernick all of the first-team reps in practice and he may have already informed Smith that Kaepernick will be the starter.
Harbaugh didn’t exactly tip his hand this week to the media on which way he’s leaning once Smith is cleared to return to the field. Sometimes it’s what’s not said that speaks volumes, and in this case with Harbaugh, that is exactly what happened. There was Harbaugh doing his best Billy Flynn impression as he tapped danced around the question of who would be his starting quarterback.
“I usually tend to go with the guy who has the hot hand,” he said, “but we have two quarterbacks who have a hot hand.”
My gut feeling on this is that Harbaugh wants the Kaepernick era to start sooner than later, but he’s just not willing to come out and say that right now, which makes sense.
Smith has done a good job at quarterback for Harbaugh since he took over as the head coach, however the 49ers were not exactly in a hurry to bring Smith back this past off-season. Harbaugh inherited Smith when he took over as head coach and decided to keep him. Kaepernick was drafted by Harbaugh and his upside is projected to be higher than Smith’s.
Kaepernick has the running ability and the play-making ability that can open eyes whenever he’s on the field, however against the Bears, he showed Harbaugh that he can also be accurate in the passing game. He also showed a great deal of poise. It was only one game, however it may have been enough for Harbaugh to stick with the switch.
Smith has put together an impressive season as the starter for the 49ers. It just seems that no matter what he does going forward, Harbaugh has his long-term plans fitted for Kaepernick to be his guy.
Harbaugh’s tap dance for the media created a quarterback controversy for his ballclub. Whichever way Harbaugh decides or has decided to go, it doesn’t change the fact that this is a football team built to go to the Super Bowl.
It’s all good that this team has two capable quarterbacks, however stability is just as important to have, especially at this point in the season where playoff positioning becomes more of a concern.

Harbaugh is going with the ‘hot hand’ Kaepernick
Two days ago after Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to victory over the Chicago Bears, Jim Harbaugh was asked who would be his starter against New Orleans. Harbaugh responded by saying, “I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.”
Well, it was reported tonight that the ‘hot hand’ he is going with is Colin Kaepernick...
Colin Kaepernick reportedly will start over Alex Smith for 49ers
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is not messing around. According to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, Harbaugh informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start at quarterback on Sunday at New Orleans.
Trotter’s report states that the decision was not based on medical reasons. Smith is recovering from a concussion suffered in Week 10 against the St. Louis Rams...
49ers Injury Report: Alex Smith or Collin Kaepernick?
The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t start Colin Kaepernick on
Sunday against the New Orleans Saints because he’s the hot hand but because the
Niners should “make the smart call” about Alex Smith’s health, according to Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The 49ers should start Colin Kaepernick against New

Do the 49ers have a QB controversy? Week 12 preview.
I think Jim Harbaugh has seen Kaepernick at practice the last two years and has been itching to get him into a game. Last week Harbaugh's expectations were met or exceeded and he's ready to move on. I don't think Smith gets back on the field this season.
After going a red hot 13-1 in week 11, I went 2-1 on Thanksgiving day. For the season that makes it 106-57....
NFL quarterback controversy San Francisco 49ers
I have yet to meet a head coach who wants to deal with a quarterback controversy. Coaches, as a rule, like certainty and stability. Quarterback controversies by definition lead to the opposite. They create distractions when you're seeking focus, and they can spark division when you're searching for togetherness.
Colin Kaepernick was brilliant on Monday night in leading San...
Smith vs. Kaepernick: There Should Be No Contest
When Alex Smith returns to health there is no question he should return to the starting line-up for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick played a great game against Chicago this past Monday, that is true but it was just one game! As the starter for the 49ers Smith is 19-5-1 in his last 25 starts, which includes a 6-2-1 record this year. So far this season smith...
RotoWire NFL Five Things
1. Colin Kaepernick is Worth a Pickup in Most Formats
Although the 49ers have yet to commit to either Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith (concussion) as the team's starter at this point, the upside presented by the former makes him a worthwhile speculative addition in most formats.
Kaepernick would presumably have his passing upside limited, just as Smith does, by the generally...
Harbaugh makes right call going with Kaepernick
Regardless of his motives or how he minces words, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh made the correct decision by naming Colin Kaepernick over Alex Smith as the starting quarterback right here, right now. It may not lead to a more peaceful Thanksgiving Day among 49ers fans and media, who will now pick apart the call much as they did the pre-decision controversy. But that is the nature...
Jim Harbaugh Has It Right; Passing Is The Key To Victory
In this week’s edition of “Football Nation Today,” gives his take on the latest news across the NFL:1st Down: Alex tells us five things we learned from week 11, and how those things will carry over to future weeks:*There are certain teams in the league that simply do not know how to win. No starting quarterback officially named for the San Francisco 49ers
After a stunning debut last week against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick showed the NFL world what he is capable of doing on the field. After the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked by reporters if the starting quarterback position would be given back to Alex Smith when he was medically cleared after suffering a concussion. Harbaugh responded by simply...
Did Jim Harbaugh start a 49ers QB Controversy?
“I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.” That came right out of 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after the 9ers took it to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. We always see the media or sometimes players start a QB controversy, but rarely we see a head coach start the fires of a quarterback battle.
In all...
Urlacher To Kaepernick: "You F*****g Played Well
Even Chicago Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher gave San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick credit after Chicago suffered a 32-7 loss on Monday Night Football.
It was really the least Urlacher could do after him and the rest of the Bears' defense put together an uninspiring at Candlestick Park.
Listen in to hear Urlacher's kind words to the second-year quarterback...
49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh Won't Confirm If Alex Smith Will Play Sunday
Today, less than 48 hours before the 49ers visit the Saints, head coach Jim Harbaugh said mums the word on whether Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith would start in New Orleans.
At this point, based on a national report, the words of safety Donte Whitner and health status of Smith, it appears 99 percent certain it will be Kapernick lining up behind center.
Harbaugh said he sees...
Plan B Bowl: Kaepernick as Flynn, Campbell as a Piñata.
Bear Hug
The Plan B Bowl was as anti-climactic as many expected (unless you live by the bay, in which case we happily accepted it). Not because it was a 6-5 dud fest, but because one team was aware there was a football game going on tonight. Colin Kaepernick did his best impersonation of Matt Flynn, creating a quarterback controversy for the next 48 hours. Jason Campbell meanwhile...
San Francisco 49ers: Starting Kaepernick Will Lead to Super Bowl
If you pay any attention to the NFL, you know that Alex Smith has had an interesting career to say the least. The former first overall draft pick from the 2005 draft out of Utah had a pretty bum-like start to his career for the first six years, only to blossom in 2011 under the tutelage of newly-appointed head coach Jim Harbaugh. Smith had his best year statistically, throwing for...
