PHILADELPHIA - NOVEMBER 08: Head coach Andy Reid of the Philadelphia Eagles coaches against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on November 8, 2009 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

I’ve wanted to write something on this all week but haven’t gotten around to it. Luckily for you, I’m still going to talk about it. If you’re already sick of hearing about it, then feel free to move on.

If you’re not already aware, there was a report from Sam Farmer of the LA Times this week with some interesting tidbits on Andy Reid.

Here’s what the article said:

Two NFL insiders, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, said that Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid was ready to walk away from the Eagles if he didn’t get more personnel control, and now he has it. We’ve seen a flurry of decisive moves by the Eagles in recent weeks, including finally cutting a blockbuster deal with receiver DeSean Jackson; extending two good soldiers, defensive end Trent Cole and right tackle Todd Herremans, outbidding the Ravens to keep guard Evan Mathis; and trading for Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

Something else about the Eagles: Reid wanted to jump in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, despite the signing of Michael Vick to a six-year, $100-million contract last season. Talks never got too serious, the insiders say, because Manning didn’t like the idea of playing against his brother Eli, quarterback of the New York Giants, at least twice a season.

The first issue would be much more concerning to me if it seemed true, but I think Andy Reid has had plenty of control during his time here. The second piece is what seemed to grab everyone’s attention.

Did it grab my attention? Yes. Did it come as a surprise to me? No.

Peyton Manning is a special player. Some have made arguments that he’s the greatest of all time. I’m not sure if he deserves that crown, but he is clearly way up there in the all-time rankings.

Should we be surprised that Reid was intrigued by the possibility of adding Manning? Absolutely not. Outside of teams like New England, Green Bay, and New Orleans, why wouldn’t you have some interest in Manning?

Every team is in a different situation when it comes to cap space and other personnel needs, but you don’t get the opportunity to have a chance at adding a guy like Manning everyday.

Clearly this idea didn’t get very far off the ground as Manning made it clear that he didn’t want to play in the NFC East, so I’m not really sure why there seemed to be such an uproar.

Should Michael Vick be offended? He shouldn’t be and I hope he’s not. Reid wasn’t interested in Manning because he doesn’t like Vick or doesn’t think he’s a good player. Reid loves the quarterback position and was simply intrigued by the possibility of coaching a player who will go down as one of the all time greats.
