Affectionately referred to as his “Bentley,” Washington Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris still commutes back and forth to Redskins Park for practice in a silver 1991 Mazda 626 sedan.
In perfect condition, Morris’ sweet ride would retail for about $1,160 according to Kelly Blue Book. Morris signed a four-year, $2.22 million deal with the Redskins for his rookie contract and will make $390,000 this season on top of his $154,000 signing bonus — by no means an obscene amount of money but enough to justify the purchase of a more reliable and less, uh, old automobile.
Still, Morris says the car has “some sentimental value to it now” and that it helps keep him grounded, reminding him of all the hard work it took for him to make it to the NFL in light of his humble beginnings, up to and including when he purchased the car during his junior season at Florida Atlantic University.
But it’s not like Morris hasn’t had difficulties along the way maintaining his loyalty to his old clunker. In fact, he recalls some interesting road trips where the old clunker almost gave out on him (via The Redskins Blog):
It was rough,” Morris recalled. “I put my emergency lights on, and people would be driving behind me, and I’d be like, ‘My emergency lights are on — stop following me.’
“I’d be stalling at lights and stuff and just sitting there trying to get it started back up, and I’d be like, ‘I have emergency lights on. Why would you get behind me? You see the lights — go around.’”
Morris nevertheless persevered, even driving the Mazda from South Florida to D.C. when he was drafted by the Redskins, a 20-hour drive.
And while he’s received a ton of flak from friends for his “Bentley,” he has no intent to ever get rid of it, even when he buys a new ride:
“One day, my kids are going to drive that car,” Morris said with a laugh. “If it breaks down, I’m gettin’ it fixed. That’s just how I am.”
Poor, poor Morris children.
