The 49ers added a special teams ace to their roster today. A day after Blake Costanzo signed with the Bears (note the 49ers didn’t seem to want him back) the 49ers have added his replacement. Some may ask why sign Cartwright and not Costanzo, well the answer is Cartwright can actually contribute in the running game and not just special teams. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Cartwright signing makes was for a Dixon release.
Jason LaCanfora first reported the signing, pending physical. Cartwright was a 7th round pick of the Redskins back in 2002. Last season he played with the Raiders.

Over at our forums, one of our posters came up with this Alex Smith Signing Conspiracy Theory. After I read it, it sorta makes perfect sense. Explanation below…
I don’t believe Alex Smith will sign anytime soon.
Alex and Harbaugh are tied together, and I believe the deal is already agreed upon, minus one detail. The cap numbers.
Alex Smith is the consummate team player and I...
Add the San Francisco 49ers into the Peyton Mannings sweep stakes. The Mort Report announced the 49ers have become the third team to emerge into the Manning sweepstakes. The Niners worked out Peyton in front of Coach Harbaugh and took a physical this week. The hightened interest in Peyton may also explain why Alex Smith
During all of the NFL free agency talk over the last few weeks in regards to where Peyton Manning was going to land, there was always the possibility that there was a sleeper team out there who could come in at the last minute and scoop Manning up. It looks like that sleeper team is the defending NFC west champion San Francisco 49ers. Manning has been working out at Duke University...
The 49ers parted ways with one veteran cornerback on Thursday, but one they definitely would like to keep around will soon sign a big deal to return to the team. Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers has agreed to terms on a multi-year deal that will make him one of the highest-paid Niners, while the player he supplanted as the team’s starting left cornerback, Shawntae Spencer, has been released.
Once believed to be the successor of Baltimore Ravens’ future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, the San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker Tavares Gooden to a one-year contract, according to team’s press release.
Gooden is a talented football player—and understanding that the, then-32 years old, aging, but effective Lewis (now 36) was approaching retirement—Gooden was hoped...
Per Chris Mortenson, Peyton Manning worked out for the 49ers at Duke Tuesday.
If you thought the Titans were the dark horse in this whole thing; this blows your mind. He performed well enough that the team ordered a medical exam for him.
What does all f this mean for 49ers QB Alex Smith? All we can speculate on is that Smith’s deal is not done yet and the 49ers are exploring...
The San Francisco 49ers surprised everyone earlier in the week when they signed Randy Moss to a contract to play wide receiver. They now seem to have an even bigger surprise for the league.
Reports from Adam Schefter have the 9ers as the third team, along with the Titans and Broncos, fighting for the services of Peyton Manning. The Dolphins were told no, and it seems that the Cardinals...
If the 49ers indeed become the new home for Petyon Manning, it would considerably change the dynamics of the situation for the team’s developing offensive line, which allowed Alex Smith to be sacked more times than any other NFL quarterback in 2011.
Hot News for CB Shawntae Spencer
Brian Westbrook, RB San Francisco Owned in 28% of Yahoo Fantasy Leagues Frank Gore suffered a season ending hip fracture in Monday Night’s win against the Cardinals, opening the door for Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon to carry the load for the Niners. Westbrook looked solid filling in for Gore, rushing for over 100 yards and a rushing TD. The 49ers have a nice schedule...
The Chicago Bears have signed five-year veteran linebacker Blake Costanzo. He’s a special teams ace, something the team values greatly, and adds depth to the position.
Peyton Manning has narrowed his choices down to three teams, but as I wrote about earlier today those three were Tennessee, Denver and Arizona, but now Arizona had been dropped out as they could not get a definite answer. This should have dropped it to two teams, but hold the phones, a new team has been involved and no one knew about it.
As reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen...
