New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson just became a dual sport owner, purchasing the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA yesterday for approximately $338 million. After turning around a team once referred to as the “Aints” and bringing the city a championship with a Super Bowl a few years back, Benson will try to make the Hornets relevant.
But if he doesn’t work out a new deal for his franchise quarterback with the Saints and pay Drew Brees, then he may simply be the owner of two mediocre clubs.
It is great for the city of New Orleans that Benson has purchased the Hornets. They have wallowed in mediocrity since the league purchased the team from founder George Shinn in 2010. They traded away their best player in Chris Paul, and it will take a bit of time to make the Hornets into a contender. But if anyone can do it, then it is Benson.
But first things first. The Hornets are not going to make the NBA Playoffs this season. It probably won’t happen next year either.
