Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press reports the Lions’ defense proved impressive Friday night, intimidating and a little undisciplined while racking up three personal fouls in the first half of a 34-3 win over Cincinnati. Ndamukong Suh tore off quarterback Andy Dalton’s helmet while slamming him to the ground, and linebacker Stephen Tulloch made a late hit that extended the Bengals’ only scoring drive.
We kept a couple drives alive with some penalties like that,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “Need to do a better job there, but you also don’t want to slow guys down.”
Linebacker Stephen Tulloch agreed with Schwartz’s call for more discipline, but he ultimately chalked up the enthusiastic play to pent-up energy.
“The thing about it is we’ve been practicing against each other for so long we’re just anxious to get out there and play,” Tulloch said. “Obviously you don’t want personal fouls. But when you play the game of football, it’s all emotion. You’ve got to try to control your emotion, but sometimes it gets the best of you. But all in all, I think that’s just what this young defense is about: just getting after players.”
Tulloch said the Lions are eager to shed their “laughingstock” image and he was encouraged by the young defense’s attitude.
“That’s what football’s all about, just getting after it and defending your teammates,” he said.
